While at home on leave in October, I bought a new Hoyt Carbon Element. Even though it only had a draw weight of 60lbs it was significantly faster than my previous 70lb bow (which was by no means new). Being from West Central Illinois, the majority of my bowhunting background involves whitetails and as a result, I was not worried about the lower draw weight. I have recently been presented the opportunity to go bear hunting in Northern Minnesota this summer after my deployment is over and would love to do it with a bow, however I am not sure if my setup is ideal. I am shooting a 350gr arrow at just over 300fps. I know that this will work for deer, but as I have no experience with bear I would like to get some feedback on if my setup is adequate, as well as any other bear hunting information that anyone is willing to share. Thanks!
only thing i would say it to up the arrow weight a little bit if you dont you can still pass right throught a bear i would think but for the extra "insurance" fatten up the arrow =]
I agree Jim! Bears are very easy to penetrate and your setup is way more than adequate. Last Bear I shot weighed 450#, I shot him with a 60# bow shooting a 330 grain arrow. I blew completely through the bear and buried 3" in the dirt. The Bear went down very quickly! Dan
Yep. Just make sure that you're not using a mechanical head. The hair can foul it up. Shoot a fixed blade head and use everything else as you would for deer. It'll work fine if you do your part and put it on the mark.
I'd suggest you study the Anatomy of a Bear also. While similar they are slightly different than a Deer. Just smart to do the homework if you are going after a species you haven't hunted before Dan
Me personally carry a side arm whenever i know that i am going bear hunting and even when i'm going deer hunting, just for the simple fact that im in mountain lion country out here. And it never fails i see at least one if not more of them every year. You see these stories of people having to beat a bear out of the tree that their sitting in with their bow, that is no bueno.
I'm hopin to get some bear action with my new bow, gunna be usin the Reign broadheads ( since I got 2 packs lol )
