Hello, I'm thinking about picking up a bow and spending some time at the range before next years hunting seasons. I've never been hunting myself, and don't know much yet.. I'm looking at bows and have figured out that i'll need about a 26 inch draw length. They say for women, lower pressures are better, like 35 lb. But I want versatility. What would be the best bow pressure to use if I plan to hunt a variety of animals? Thanks so much for the info!
I was told that for hunting, 40 lbs is better than the legal 35 required. I started with 40 lbs weight on my Mission Craze with a 27" draw. It was a bit difficult to pull at first but now (6 months later) I have no problems at all, in fact, I'm thinking of increasing the weight. I picked this bow because the weight range is from 27-70 lbs at that draw. It's also shorter than others, so this size bow works for me as I'm short too! :-) I put an indoor range in my basement and have 14 yards. It's perfect as I can practice when I come back from work for a few minutes here and there. Get a good mentor to show you proper form so you don't pick up too much bad habits from the start. Good luck and have fun!!! Mim
Good info! Thanks so much for the info! I thought I'd like to use a higher pressure than the legal minimum, but don't have a lot of strength to be able to go much higher, I don't think. Do you think higher pressures are required for certain game (maybe deer) , an lower pressures required for smaller game (squirrels, etc)? If so, how low for small game, and how high for large game? The maximum of 70 lb that you have on your bow is surprising to me... In what applications do you think this higher pressure is useful?
You'll want to check the regs of the states you want to hunt and make sure your above the minimum. I know there are some that are at 40lb min. draw eight. If your just starting to shoot I would start there, then a couple of months in move to 45, then finish up trying to get to that 50lb mark. You can hunt pretty much anything in the lower 48 if your in the 50's....
Picked a bow Awesome - Thanks for your help. I picked out a bow and can't wait for it to arrive!! I found one that's adjustable from 27 to 30 inch draw, and 45 to 70 lb weight. It has a 35 inch length and (only) 50% let-off. So based on your advice, I guess it may be a bit difficult for me at first. But I also got it for really cheap, which is a major factor for me - lol. So excited!!!
