I'm new to bow hunting and i've been lookin at hoyt bows and ive heard the longer bows like the alphamax 35, maxxis 35 etc... are more forgiving and i see the shorter bows maxxis 31 etc... bows are faster but i know theres gotta be more to it so if you have any information for me it would greatly be appreciated thanks
A miss at 350 fps is still a miss. A well placed shot at 250 fps is just as dead as one at 350... Shoot a more forgiving set-up at lower speed and hit what you're aiming at every time, especially if you're just starting out. Don't get caught up in the race for speed.
Rob gave you good advice, of course. If you've taken a fancy to Hoyt (good choice, by the way), I'd locate a couple dealers within an hour or so driving range and go spend some time shooting several of them to get a feel for what you're looking at. You may end up liking one over the other from a pure shot feel standpoint. Sometimes, people don't like short a-to-a (axle-to-axle) bows based on the string angle and not being able to use the string itself as a third point of reference in anchoring (longer a-to-a bows seem to lend themselves to this more easily, as you won't find yourself craning your neck over to make it happen. For some, it can seem "weird" for the string to be floating an inch or two out in front of your face...) The good thing about most of the short a-to-a bows is they're being built these days with very forgiving brace heights (seven to seven and 1/2 inches to start with) which can make them a very good hunting choice. A lot of people prefer hunting bows around 34" or so... many of my friends' favorite platform is 34", and I concur. So I'd at least shooting the AM 35 to feel the differences. Let us know what you end up with, and welcome to the addiction!
Greg's right, you should shoot them to get a feel for what you like. As your statement says, there is a LOT more to it. Every screw demands a different driver. Each hunter demands a different bow. I have several different bows just as some people have several differnet rifle calibers. For mountain goats the average shot is less than 20 yards, goats are a relatively large target, and not that jumpy/spooky but they are tougher to penetrate than anything on this continent and they live atop vicious, mountainous terrain. That demands that my goat bow be light and powerful at the sacrifice of a little accuracy (which with 25+ yrs of experience I can afford a bit more than a novice) and noise. My stripped down DXT is perfect for that. My deer bow that's only going to get toted 1/2 mile to my stand and is to sit in my lap all day can be heavier and longer but it's got to be quieter and more accurate. 1st determine what feels good. Then determine what you need it for. Then determine the sacrifices you can make to meet both. Then choose what you need that makes the least sacrifices toward what you want.
thanks guys helps alot my buddie had a kattera 35 and i loved it ive shot the alphamax 32 a few times but i havent shot the maxxis yet theres a local bowshop within mintes of my house and from what i hear he is great he suggested the maxxis 31 but i guess im goin to have to get in there and shoot both the 31 n 35 thanks again
Again... to Rob's point: it depends upon what you're looking for. If you're just looking for a nice "placeholder" that help dampen vibration, Sims makes a nice S-coil for around $20 bucks or so. You can spend more to help you find something that'll help you get some weight away from the riser and actually act more like a true "stabilizer"... For what it's worth, VERY few bowhunters buy stabilizers for stabilization purposes; most buy a product that help with dampening and vibration reduction.
Congrats....now you need to post up some pics. I haven't gotten the chance to shoot the Maxxis yet, but if it's anything like the AM, it got to be a nice shooting bow. How did you end up rigging her out?
Its still at the bow shop getting everything ready to go i did everything fuse but the rest and im tryin the Trophy taker xtreme FC angled slot rest the guys at the shop talked it up pretty good and i shot his bow with it so we will see how it works out
