I’m not sure how many of you seen this deer but it was taken in my home town. The grandson of our local archery shop owner took this deer in early October. He’s a good archer who shoots competitions. He watched this deer enter his permission piece in the same corner of a bean field for multiple nights. He decided to set up on the ground and use a crossbow for that reason. The buck did exactly what he thought and he got him the first sit. My question is, how many of you would put down your bow and pick up a crossbow to harvest a giant? Personally I don’t think I will ever put down the bow unless I had an injury. The experience of shooting deer with a vertical bow is a feeling like no other. There have been plenty of hunts where I could have killed with a crossbow but screw it up with my bow instead. And oddly enough those experiences are cherished just as much as the successful ones. No hate for this young man on killing this giant. He did his homework and set himself up perfectly. Plus he is having the mount displayed at his grandpas archery shop for people like me to come enjoy.
To each their own. I think x bows are great for kids and people that can no longer shoot a vertical bow. I personally wouldn’t want to shoot that deer with a x bow over a vertical bow, but If it was the only means to do it then I would have. I would have setup in a tree where I saw that deer coming from as long as there was a place that worked and hunted from a run and gun. Congrats to the hunter thats a great buck.
He said in a pod cast that the corner the deer was entering was tall grass and small trees so a ground sit was his only choice. Definitely a feat considering the whole country block was hunting that deer. I bet those guys were relieved he shot that deer early so they didn’t pass on big deer
Different strokes for different folks, I have a similar story about a pa buck. As long as it’s legal have at it!
The weapon is a personal choice. Yes some weapons make certain situations easier to accomplish the goal. It all boiled down what you want to achieve. I personally like the challenge of a vertical bow and rarely hunt with anything else. I will hunt during rifle season with bow also. Just what i like. I had a mega buck to hunt one year. I could have easily killed him with a crossbow. Also had a muzzleloader season come and go while i was hunting him. Had close friends telling me i should go out and shoot him with a muzzleloader. But that wasn't my style or how i wanted to hunt him. I was patient and it paid off with one my favorite and memorable hunts i ever had. The challenge is what made the hunt.
