Have you heard anyone say something along that lines of: "Well that would be a good buck for a bow." or "That would make for a good archery buck." Personally, if I'm not going to shoot it with a gun, I'm not going to shoot it with a bow. Just odd in my opinion...
Never heard that before. Around here (PA) people seem to look for nice bucks in archery season, then shoot the 1st legal buck in gun season, so they can say "got my buck". That mentality I cannot understand.
I really don't understand... isn't that almost implying that its easier to kill a deer with a bow..or if they bow hunt that they couldn't let it walk..?
It is common around NE too, I have to say I've even caught myself buying into it. I think it is most common for guys that dabble in archery but live for gun season. They don't put in the time on stand and in the woods to shoot big bucks during archery season. It also probably has a lot to do with the fact that our gun season is in the heart of the rut almost every year, so the chances of seeing big bucks durning rifle are definitely higher.
I think it also has to do with the fact that deer have to be with 40 yards for most bow hunters, but only with several hundred for gun. It's probably the reason that BC has a higher standard when compared to PY.
WE live in central ILLINOIS and It is a very common saying around here. Most of the guys from are community are die hard bowhunters. We live for it. If you shoot a big deer ( like a 170s) with your shot gun and your out driving around with it in the back of your truck. You better get ready to hear " Man that would of been a hell of a deer if you shot it with your bow". You better have 190 typical or a 200 non typical to get anyone interested in telling you killed a good one with your gun.
This is how I look at it. Come rifle season I will probably take the first thing with a rack that comes around just so I know I will fill my freezer. With my bow I am going to be much more selective and go after what I see as my Target buck. And if possible I won't be rifle hunting where I bow hunt. And by their statement "that's an archery buck" I believe they are implying it is harder and will lower their standards just to fill the tag.
" I got pulled over the other night and the cop asked me if I had been drinking, I said why is there a fat chick in my back seat again!" larry the cable guy
That's how I take it too, but still doesn't mean I'm going to lower my standards. If I'm going to fill the freezer, it will be with does. I will let little bucks walk. Also, in Indiana, we only get 1 buck tag to use all year. If you shoot a little buck, they'll never get big.
I'd rather shoot 2 does during shotgun season then waste a tag on a basket rack 8.Its just more impressive to kill a big deer with a bow cause its up close and personal, using a gun it could be 150 yards away
Here's the deal. I can sit in my stand and pick 125-130 class bucks off w. my rifle at 200 yards, but I will pass them every time. I'm much more likely to take that 130 class buck w. my bow because it is way more challenging and much more difficult with my bow. My general rule of thumb is to shoot nothing smaller than what I already have w. my rifle. I'm by no means an accomplished bow hunter, so yes. My standards are lower for bowhunting.
Not around here. Nor doe tags in rifle season for us. I have 3 tags 2 for bow and 1 for rifle. All 3 can be bucks but only a bow can be used for doe. So I will be doing th opposite... Lowering my standards with a rifle.
