I'll be the first to admit that I really don't have that much knowledge when it comes to whiskey/bourbon. I still have yet to really acquire a taste for it, so I'm in need of some advice. I'm planning on getting my girlfriends dad a decent bottle of bourbon, and I'm just seeking some opinions of other people. From some "research" online, I made up a small list of possible purchases including Makers Mark 46, Woodford Reserve, and Jeffersons/Jeffersons Reserve. I'm only wanting to spend around $40 for the bottle though, because I'm still in school and broke lol.
I am a big Makers Mark fan and like it very well. I also like Basil Hayden's. It is pretty smooth and has good flavors. I would suggest going to a local establishment that may have a few different varieties and sample a few on ice with a splash of water. Get one you like and think is good that way when you guys have a drink together you can intelligently talk about the brand and why you picked it...good for conversation.
I dont live far from all the Kentucky Disteries and me and my wife did the Burbon Trail tour and hit all of them on day , it was really neat to see how some of them still do it like they did 100 years ago not much ghanged , it was really cool to see that ......but anyways my all time favorite is Wild Turkey's American Honey that stuff is awsome .
My answer would personally depend on if he will mix or drink straight, but Maker's Mark or Maker's 46 are solid gift choices. Woodford is good too. I don't particularly care for Jefferson. Here are a few other suggestions (most are single barrel bourbons). Prices are approx. VA prices for 750 ml bottle. Baker's - $45 Bulleit - $30 Four Roses - $40 Eagle Rare - $40?? Evan Williams White Label - Cheap but tasty Can you tell I drink bourbon?
For mixing Makers, for straight, Woodford. Buffalo Trace is good too. Woodford will be about the best you can get for that price range. I used to do work at the distillery. Nice folks, beautiful property.
knob creek is my first chioce. three fingers and a budweiser is my fav! no knob you say how bout Bulleit!!!!!!!!! tasty, just sip
Personally, I'd look at a single malt scotch. There are gift varieties out there that include several small bottles of different single malts. My brother got me one a few years back, they all stacked up to be about the size of a wine bottle. A true connoisseur will very much appreciate a high quality single malt (or several). http://www.google.com/products/cata...sa=X&ei=zEPaToVnyPqxAqOwnZUO&ved=0CCMQ8wIwAA# For instance. This will say a lot more than a "run of the mill" kind of whiskey. There are a lot of single malt scotches out there, and many aren't worth the bottle they're in. This one holds up to even google scrutiny. $51 is right at your budget, but I think that extra $20 (with shipping) is worth it (if there was an easy way to do it, I'd even chip in for the sake of the father). http://www.bottlebuys.com/sku151632...campaign=LAGAVULIN SCOTCH SINGLE MALT 16 YEAR with shipping its under $60. Best of luck in your search!
Woodford Reserve for my go-to and is priced within your range. Elmer T. Lee or one of the Pappy Van Winkle family of bourbons would be great for future reference if you decide you enjoy drinking with him and want to get him something a little nicer. On the rocks or a with a splash of water is the only way to go! Best of luck. Sean Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I order interesting single malt Scotch's direct from Scotland's for myself and gift. If he's a whiskey drinker that could be an idea as well.
