I wanted to add another trail cam to my collection (admittedly, I have quite a few cheapos that should be hitting the trash bin). I have already picked up a Bushnell Trail Cam HD and love the pictures. However, it was a more spendy cam. I really don't need 8 or 12MP images to scout for deer, either. But my old cheap cams suck batteries, essentially making them expensive cams to operate. The Bushnell sips from AA batteries, making it cheap to run. Was there a happy medium?

I talked to the guys a trailcampro.com. Very friendly, very helpful and since they test each cam model, they know their stuff.

What did I get? I bought one of their test units, a Primos Truth Cam 35 Ultra. It rated extremely high on battery life and fair in overall performance. While some may say the settings are limited, I find I rarely use very many any way. I think their recommendation for a cheap cam with cheap operation was a good one.

Hope to have this cam out soon, possibly this weekend. Should be a snap to set up and get rolling on some scouting.

Yeah there is a bunch to choose from. I think even the cheapest brands take good pictures. Moultrie has always been good to me for the price and quality.

Itdoes depend on what you want. Need pics for outdoor articles, something hi-res may be the ticket. But me? I hunt. I want to have as many cams as I can. Cheaper = more unless they suck batteries. My old cheapos ate 6C or a lantern battery in 2 weeks!

I don't have any Moultries, but my friend Jim, also with NCO, uses those and the cheaper Walmart Bushnells with success.

Actually, the Primos is lower than the Bushnell and Coverts for battery draw. And picture quality... have you seen the posts from my Wildlife Innovation cams? I have no where to go but up! LOL! My Bushnell does take very pretty pics... more than what I require. I want to identify the deer, not count the ticks hanging off of them.

The Bushnell was chosen for quality and battery life. The primos for battery life and cost.

I may look for a long range cam next. My land is real thick though, not sure if I have a spot open for 70 yards straight. Then again, I just put down a couple pounds of Lucky 7 (a little goes a long way) and bring the deer in close ;)

On a side note, spray attractant/ cover scents are out testing (Sweet Vanilla Thrilla and Brazen Butternut). First "near commercial" batch of Scent Shredder odor eliminator is being put in sample bottles as well. All are modern twists and chemistries on old, proven favorites of Jim's (our co-founder). Deer urine products are being finalized as well. LOTS going on!

Identifying deer is always a priority and is always helped by the clarity of the picture. I'd rather spend about the same or a few dollars more on a camera that takes incredible pictures than something that doesn't come close. Wouldn't even make any sense to.

I would rather have more cams to cover more ground. I can do that with the 35 Ultras. Also, if a couple get stolen (happens quite often), I am less concerned on the cheaper cams. I can have one Reconyx and have the best of the best (per trailcampro) and get awesome pictures... but on another property I wont get any pictures because I burned up my entire cam budget. Sometimes you don't need a Ferrari to pick up groceries. You take the scooter.

I don't have any of the newer 35 ultras, but the older ones just didn't do it for me. Good luck with it

I talked to two guys at trailcampro.com. They rated it well and it was rated highest in the areas I was looking for. I really don't expect it to be the greatest, I am realistic. If it can run on 8 AA for 4-5 months (or 50K pics) and I get reasonable pictures (no or few ghosts, blurs, whiteouts, etc.) I will be satisfied. I'll post results on the cam when I get it out. Can't find a Python cable locally, so may not get one until next week.
