I harvested a doe the other week, and upon field dressing her I noticed she had a full bladder... Hmm... Why pay $20 when it's right there?? So I bottled it. set it in the back of my pick-up and went on my way. The next day come, I grab the bottle, and it looks like I bottle 6oz of Blood....? Dark red / brownish, but more red than anything. So either it's a normal discolouration or something was up with this doe?? Makes me wonder about Bloodcrik's bloody deer beds he found back in Febuary in the snow?
I think it spoils if you don't add a preservative. There is a local farm that sells fresh doe piss, but you have to keep it frozen until you are going to use it and they say it has to all be used right away. Does it stink real bad?
Well, I didn't inhale it, but when I did take the cap of and smelled it, it didn't smell "bad" at all. Just odd how it turned red overnight...
I've never thought about doing that, but I think next year I might try to start.. Interested to hear what could have caused it to turn colors so fast also.
It darkens when it comes in contact with air. To prevent this you'd need to use a syringe needle to extract it from the bladder into an airtight pouch, this eliminates any air contact and keeps it 100% fresh until you use it. Several companies sell kits to do this exact process.
I don't remember where I read it, but here a while back, I read an article about doing just that, and it advised to keep it refrigerated or else it would "spoil" and turn rancid and turn deer away rather than attract them...
I have a good friend that works for a local deer farm that raises huge bucks for selling to ranches. They also started bottling and selling doe urine. He said the stuff you get in stores in absolutely junk. He invited me to come up the next time they take urine from a doe to see why. He said the stuff in stores gets old and is almost immediately worthless for the most part. Mainly from a sexual attractant standpoint. He told me to bring a bottle of stuff I have to compare with the stuff they get out of one of their deer to see the difference. The stuff out of a fresh deer smells NOTHING like the bottled stuff, NOTHING! It actually has a sweet smell to it rather than the gagging, nasty smell of the store brands. He did say that once the bottled urine they collect sits for a day or so, it smells pretty much the same as the stuff you buy in the store as well. The air causes the urine to break down and turn to ammonia.
