So did rifles in northern "wooded" wi decimate the deer herd or over the counter unlimited doe tags do it?

Missouri allows rifles during the rut and it's an over the counter tag. They have more mature bucks than most of the county and the good area is a lot like Southern Iowa....rolling with timber and open fields and pastures. Kansas is even more open and might be the best state there is right now. It's the pressure, not the weapons. Rifles during general gun season in Iowa may not happen, but it certainly would not mess one bit with the age structure of our herd. Again, a gun tag filled is a gun tag filled. It really doesn't matter what kind of gun. I watched a guy blow up a pumpkin at 350 yards last Fall with a smokeless muzzleloader. They are already legal and being used during our general gun AND late season muzzy. No difference really.

I remember when in-line muzzy's and scopes being allowed on muzzleloaders was also going to wipe out every big buck in our state. This is no different. A bunch of hype for nothing. Fear mongering out of worry that someone else may have success on killing a big buck. Whitetail hunters have become the biggest bunch of whiners on the planet. Spend your energy killing the big bucks, not worrying about how many someone else might get.

    I dunno? Not from there.
Could be a combo of things. Wolves, harsh witers, lack of good browse/ ag land. I dunno?

Nope. My throat and any fear of rifles toppling the big buck population in iowa are clear.

    Checked a couple cards.

This sucker is in the same spot at the same time every single day. Hopefully one of my buddies can kill him this week.

Good luck. Bugs should be non existent, cool temps.
Boars won't be following sows quite yet so hopefully the guy is using good food stuff.
Try for an exit wound! If you hear the " bawl", it's dead!!
But some don't so don't assume it's not dead iffn you don't hear it.
Kill it, gut n skin it asap and get the meat taken care of.
    Excellent vittles.

Sorry for the delay in updating. Was super busy catching up at work after getting home from Canada. Saskatchewan was amazing. I had an absolute blast. Saw a ton of animals...moose, sage grouse, snowshoe hares, mule deer, whitetails, tons of waterfowl and beavers, and 53 bears. Our group was 4/4 on bears. The scenery up there is pretty incredible too.

I was honestly very surprised at how many bears I saw, and the number of color phase bears.
