Idk. Im not a bear expert by any stretch. The outfitter just told me they like to see the smaller bears passed up and that they try to shoot bears 300lbs and up. Heck if I know. Its all new to me.

Gottchya. The way your initial post read to me was he feeding you a b.s line about " managing" for trophy bear.
An outfitter for any species wants their client to shoot big whatever.
Stay clean, hunt over baits that ain't been hunted, bring a thermacell.
    Best of luck.

    Oh yeah, NO Mech heads:deadhorse:

Well his exact words were “we are a quality , not a quantity outfitter”

Heck this is basically about the experience for me. I’ve never been that far North before. The walleye and pike fishing is supposed to be spectacular as well. That being said, I’m not going to shoot a little bear just because. Its a 6 day hunt so the chances should be good that I have a chance at something big.

Are mechanical heads really that much of an issue? I have yet to see my Trypans not blow completely through an animal. But, I was given some wicked looking fixed heads by a guy from Hungary of all places. He makes them. They are called Hunor Broadheads. He have me some 4 blade and some 2 blade ones. They actually are so sharp it makes me nervous to open the package. I may use them in Saskatchewan.

So I guess I'm testifying at the next Iowa Senate subcommittee meeting. I've been in contact with a dozen senators in the last 24 hours regarding a proposed bill legalizing HPRs in Iowa.

Rifles during gun season would have little to no negative impact on our deer herd. We have way too many deer as it is right now in Southern Iowa. And I love having lots of deer, but we are out of control with numbers. Partly because our weather was terrible during shotgun season and hunting pressure was down. Many, many, many deer are crippled by guys throwing inaccurate slugs with shotguns. Rifles may actually help to reduce the number of crippled deer and fill some tags on the first deer hit instead of the third or fourth. The sky will definitely not fall. Missouri is in no way a comparison as they allow rifles during the rut. That is an entirely different scenario. Rifles will not impact the herd dynamics at all. They may actually improve it.

Most fellas that buy a bear hunt go on thinking the same thing. First few sits they wait for a " biggie" . Than the clock starts ticking and by the last sit,. BANG!
I've shot 56-57 bear and have not shot a huge one.
Couple close calls with monsters. I'm very Leary of an outfitter that claims they can put you on a big one.
If there are fellas sitting that stand before you get there, I'd go to an unused stand that is getting hit.
Your time frame should be hot n heavy for the bear rut. A giant could come in just following the trails others make to the bait without ever being there before.

As for mechanical heads, I dispise them in general for everything. But bear exspecially. Trailing bear in the dark is no fun!
2 small in/ outs Trump's a high hit entry only.
Bear die VERY fast with a double lung/ heart shot.
Probably 45 of the ones I've shot have not made it past 30 yards. I don't know about all mechanical heads but I'll NEVER allow a Rage in camp again!.
My ex has shot about 15 with plain muzzy 3 bladeheads.
    Most all blew through.

I'm not familiar with HPR? But if it has to do with rifle vs shotguns, kill the bill !!?
Rifles were allowed here about 10 years ago? after being only shotguns/ slugs. Deer took an ass whipping! But I'm primarily in flat agriculture area.

To dismiss mechanicals without considering arrow weight and KE is rather foolish. You put any mechanical on a 450 + grain arrow with KE in the 80's it will get thru any black bear.

    Thanks for the input!

My hunt is May 5-11th and will be the first hunt of the year at this outfitter. They run 3 bear hunts per year, and mine is the first one.

In full disclosure I’m not paying for the hunt, at least not directly. I sent the guy 40 cameras in exchange for 2 hunts. I am perfectly fine coming home without anything instead of shooting a 150lb bear. I have access to world class coastal bear hunting in NC any time I want, so it’s not like this is my only opportunity. But I’m really excited about just the experience of going that far North.

These are the heads I am taking for bear

As far as the HPR bill, yes it is a proposal to allow bottlenecked centerfire cartridges during gun season. I have started an advocacy group speaking out against the bill, which has garnered a lot of attention in only a few days. I have spoken to three senators and a lobbyist since 4:00 pm about it.

Shoot that 4 blade head. Looks stout.
May 5-11 can be a nice time frame. No bugs and trees not leafed out yet. The big boars won't be quite as Randy as they will be late May but hides should be superb!.
Wish you the best on the trip.

I hope the rifle thing gets defeated. It sure hurt us here..

On the western side, not far from Alberta. Near the town of Goodsoil.

Spent yesterday afternoon scouting one of the new leases. It will be a tremendous rut farm. I found two awesome November stand locations. One is in a block of woods where the top of several ridges converge. The top is littered with rubs and trails. Access is perfect too. The other stand will be down in a creek bottom where it joins the biggest block of timber. Does will be living out in the fingers along creek, so bucks should be traveling to/from those fingers back to timber. It’s one of those spots where every single deer almost doesn’t have a choice but to walk by this spot. Then I picked a spot for a tower blind for late season where the deer are coming off the high ridges into a crop field. Zero previous history on the farm, so the next step is to get minerals and cameras out to see what lives there. Pretty exciting stuff!

I’ve never been much of a turkey hunter, but I have a good friend coming up to turkey hunt with me in a few weeks, so I put some cameras out to try to locate some birds.

Yesterday I took a scouting walk on one of the new farms. Found a shed from a good looking 2 year old.

I like those Creek bottom pics!
Just looks like a classic rut spot.
