My buddy & I just started making plans for a DIY Elk hunting trip out to Colorado (2013). I've hunted whitetail all my life, but I'm pretty green when it comes to elk.

So, what are some good books for bowhunting elk & elk behavior?

Fitz. Take a look at www.elknut.com. My dad and I started really using Pauls system a few years ago and it has sky rocketed our success. The mans knowledge on elk is unbelievable.

I would recommend getting one of his instructional videos as well as his playbook to carry along while hunting. Get a hung up bull? just go to the playbook, he'll explain why and how to fix it.

+1 for the Elknut! His stuff has probably been my best resource. I have read a few books and really didn't get a bunch out of them, a few tips here and there, but nothing really substantial.

Also check out the Colorado DOW site. They have free elk hunting articles.

    Hope this helps!

Do you have any idea where you are trying to hunt?

Be careful, elk hunting is addictive!

I have a friend in the San Louis Valley. He hooked my dad & brother up a few years ago when they went after elk with rifles. They went somewhere west of Alamosa. Dad lived in the valley for about 4 years, I spent the summer of '01 living there.

I havn't hunted the southwest part of Colorado yet, but I have heard that there are a lot of elk in the area and some big ones to boot. Good luck!
