I am finally going to attempt to stay in my stand all day this year on Opening day. How do you guy/gals to it? I started freaking out after about 4 hours, but on opening day it’s be over12 hours of light, so I got to figure out what to do. Do you read, draw, play video games on your phone, listen to music (headphone of course) or what. I need some ideas for keeping my sanity while sitting that long.
I usually sit and watch for a few hours.. When I start getting distracted, I will play a game on the IPhone, then just scroll thru weather apps and news apps... I do my best thinkin in the stand....
yeah, unfortunitly my phone battery wouldn last that long if I was on it. My only thinking involved getting down from the stand I am in. lol
All day sit on opening day? Way too hot in GA to try that. We are most likely to have mid 90 temps when we open next Sat. Later in the season when I do sit all day, I will take a book or magazine or mess with my iPhone during any slow periods. But dont get too focused on what you are reading/doing and forget to scan the woods.
I bring my iPod Touch, and play solitaire or poker, mostly just card games. And the texting machine as well
I usually just browse bowhunting.com on my phone and post in the "Live from the Treestand" thread which will be started in the next day or so!!! And it is so much easier now with Board Express or Tapatalk!
I'd love to be able to post live threads from the stand unfortunitly, my ground is in the true bottoms of IL. No service for miles.
I am a reader. Mystery, westerns.....whatever keeps your interest. A good hunting magazine is hard to beat too. I also carry a little electronic handheld Yatzee game. Its addicting. Always trying to beat that top score.
I used to read a lot in the stand but haven't for the past couple years. It did keep my mind occupied and my body still. I've had to put a book down several times to kill deer. BUT no matter what you think, some deer are mighty sneaky and can walk right by without you noticing. This is why I gave it up. I do find myself messing with my Droid though.
I hunt until about 10 or so on opening day. Then I get down an go to the camp an take a nap or get something to eat. I go get back in the stand around 2:30 or so. When the weather starts to cool down I start having longer hunts.
I don't even think about sitting all day until around the last week of Oct when the day time activity seems to pick up around here. I will often sit until around noon and then walk back to the truck for a 1 hr break to stretch out the back muscles a little. I sometimes sit all day but I don't find it to be an easy thing to do...makes for a long day IMO When I'm bored I'll browse the web on my phone or text some buddies
When I first started hunting archery20 yrs ago,I had a very hard time staying in one spot.I bought a climber stand(ole man).Out of pure laziness(being honest)I stay in that tree all day(hunt it 4 two three days)Because I don't want to ''lug'' the stand to a new location. As the years went by,I gathered more and more ''trinkets''(gear)That gives me something to ''play''with. I have also taken paperback books/Mags in said tree. The older I get the less I move.Back problems keep me from climbing every tree in the forest, nowadays. Just remember, the grass isn't always greener under that far off oak! .....Oh! a nap never hurt either. Ole man... ole man... in the tree top, There be a big buck Under u'r spot Wake up now! Wake up quick! or u won't fill that tag so quick!!!!! Just thought that up
I leave all electronics at home!I hunt to be in nature .If you can't be occupied enough with all that nature has to offer, why are you in the woods?
It's the thought of sitting in a small stand from 5 AM till 7:30 PM, so unless Mother Nature is handing out quickies, I'm not sure if I can stay there all day without walking around stirring up scent everywhere. I normally don't sit all day; however, on a couple occasions, last season, I left at 10 AM and returned at 3 PM to find fresh photos on my trail cam's.
as the general consensus already says in this thread, the iPhone is a life saver in the stand. when I'm hunting my box stands during gun season I'll actually take my iPad with me... then I can easily sit there and read a book while I wait.
