What a frickin joke.... http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/41507/boise-state-responds-to-ncaa-inquiry Another joke of an NCAA rule... Giving kids a floor or couch to sleep on is a violation??? Give me a break. These clowns line their pockets on these kids and then punish these kids and their universities over these stupid rules. The NCAA needs to overhaul it's rule book.
Especially if it was a player allowing them to sleep on his floor. Its not like the school gave them rooms in the dorm or something for free, its pretty much just a college kid letting other college kids stay at his house. Big deal
tough one. are they talking about recruits???? if so guess im not sure where they want the kids to sleep for the night???? maybe it was just kids who like iHunt said were staying with another player and pocketing the housing/training table per diems........... im a bit confused???
Isaiah, probably not recruits as they usually stay at hotels you know. Here are some scenarios I can envision from cash strapped and/or greedy student athletes. Rent out a 3 bedroom appt with another buddy on the football/backetball/womens gymnastics/womens track and field team and use your housing voucher. Then allow another student/friend/whatever to stay in that third room for a little cash and get a kick back or don't charge them at all. Another one would be to go to the cafeteria and load up some food and bring it back to your place and let someone else eat that food. The monetary value of all of those violations only equated to around 5k over 5 years. It does not appear to be a significant problem and is extremely hard to enforce unless you have an eye witness and or snitch.
Or have a program that has knowledge of an infraction and went out of their way to report and open themselves up to further investigation to prove there isn't any larger issues within the organization. JAB JAB.... >
hmmmmmmmmm i always thought the incoming guys shacked up with thier hosts..... yeah i hear yall on the "getting food for others" we did it all the time. some kids on the team didnt have jack! the older guys would make sure they got something to eat. bad deal if thats what happend...
My brother is on a full ride wrestling scholarship at UW Madision and over the course of the last 3 years he has had to turn away over 10k of winnings at tournaments that were not NCAA sanctioned. The NCAA has there hands in everything that goes on with these athletes both in season and out of season. The question comes over 10 times a year if something is an NCAA violation or not. All athletes have to be extremely careful about the things they do or anything they might recieve as gifts or payments. I do agree with some of the rules as they are put in place to keep things on a level playing field. The NCAA goes out of there way though to make life a pain in the butt for these athletes.
I couldn't resist jabbing you Buckeye. I know the recruiting trips I went on we always stayed with the hosts, and I never paid for anything while out and about. Granted this was 20 years ago but I have a hard time believing much has changed. Once in school I was pretty much covered but I know of kids that just crashed where ever people let them, I suppose that might be the case but seems pretty nit picky to me. I lived in a house my junior year that I was never really sure who all lived there between the party leftovers and concubines.
Thanks!!! Yes, he is doing very well. I didn't mean to bring him into this but I thought it was a good example and I just know from first hand experience how difficult it can be following every NCAA rule that is in place for student athletes. It is very tough for him to do that, but your options are either except the money and forfeit your eligibility, or refuse it so you can wrestle the next season. A good example of how this would really suck is if he were to make the 2012 olympic team and go on to win the gold. His earnings would be $250,000 and he would have to turn the money down or accept it and forfeit his last season of college wrestling. Now this is all a BIG "what if situation", but that would definately not be cool. I have a feeling he would except the money and forfeit his last season and I wouldn't blame him one bit for that. $250,000 in the sport of wrestling is like $30 million for a baseball or basketball player these days.
Holy crappola. They got them for a "Sleep Over". That's insane. 'Hey Bill, I don't have another bed, but flop on my floor and I'll fix you some toast and hot chocolate in the morning before we go to the gym". "Oh, I can't do that Rob. That would be worth $4.19. It's a violation and they'll say bad things about you, me, the university and my parents. The coach will get fired and 39 scholarships will be yanked from the womens soccer team". It's getting stupid at this point.
I hope this isn't a case of a good Samaritan doing something good for another player in need. Say if the guy didn't have a place to stay and didn't have money for food or to go anywhere and the guy said "hey come crash at my place" I think the NCAA is just out looking for something to B**** about!!
jeeeeeeeeeez, i spend a lot of time in Madison and keep up with U-Dubs athletics so this kinda hits home... you would think that he could at least donate it to the wrestling program in his honor or something like that. no wonder why kids try and "stick" it to the universities and sell books etc. good luck next season i'll be watching!!!!!
That is a great idea and makes too much sense for the NCAA to accept it. Haha That would be a great thing to do with it though, and thanks for the support!!!
