So the family just bought a cabin in the North woods of New Hampshire and there are blueberries everywhere. My question is, do deer eat them?
I've never noticed them eating blueberries, but I suppose it's possible? We had a huge crop of BBs ripen this past week. Man they are good! Starting to see a lot or bear crap full of berries too
In my yard, Blueberries seem to be the 'liver and onions' of the deer food world. If they don't have better choices, they begrudgedly eat them... My friend with a blueberry farm has offered to let me put a stand over his fields, so maybe they have less choices at his place. Or better berries...
Yeah friend who has blueberries said this is the first year in a while he notices the deer actually hitting his bushes enough to be noticeable......and we're having one of the worst droughts in years.
I know i'll eat them... But id think if there aren't many other choices the nutritional value has to be of some use to the deer? I guess I wonder are they eating blackberries and raspberries also?
You bet they do. They eat the early spring buds, and eat the berries as they ripen. Have to fence in the blueberry plants in my yard year-round.
A lot of hunters have blueberries in their gardens, so they often wonder do deer eat blueberries or not. Yes, deer eat blueberries and berries are one of the favorite foods for deer. They will eat old or new berry plants in no time.
Excuse me... I have 15 blueberry bushes. Behind a fence surrounded by food plots. This would be alfalfa, clovers, beans, hemp, brassica. With Apples, plum, two huge mulberry, raspberry, blackberry brush, grape vines and hazelnuts. You all have seen pics of all of it. The deer still will jump the fence to eat the blueberry year round. They love them. When the gate is open they will walk past everything else to eat the blueberry.
