Just signed on all of you young folks-
i first killed a deer with a ben pearson bow drawing 40# with a cedar arrow and a bear braodhead back in 1971. Last year a freind gave me a mathews featherlight (circa 1999) and i decided that i was going to put the rifle up (after almost 40 years) and go back to the stick & string. I guess i was sucked in by the commercials on the rage & swackher broadheads. I hit two deer, one with each, both quartering away, never more than three drops of blood. I was pulling that bow back at 58 pounds and did not get much penetration at 30 yards. Was told that i did not have enough kinetic energy to shoot those broadheads. So, i bought a 2011 mission venture pulling at 62 pounds to improve kinetic energy. My property is loaded with quisatch trees (a thicker tree with more thorns than mesquite which when hit, they can bury themselves in that and you won't find them before the coyotes). I am a pretty good shot. But i need some input on what the you guys think on the kind of broadheads you would use in exetremely thick brush in south texas. I am thinking of using nap's thunderheads. Any other sugestions?

    Thanks for replying-
been shooting 125gr for wider penetration-took a look at them. What do you think? They don't seem to make a 125.

Slick Trick makes a 125 grain head in every head they produce with the exception of the Razor trick , the 125 grain doesnt mean its gonna be wider cut , the furrels are heavier

I didn't care for the thunderheads because if the come unscrewed from the arrow at all, the blades fall off. Bad design IMO.

I think if you want to keep shooting a mechanical head you do have some options. The 100 gr. steelheads are extremely accurate and with the 7 deer I have killed with them, all were pass thrus except one that I shattered the shoulder with. I was only shooting about 55 pounds and a 28" draw. There are more that would work but this is my personal favorite.

But if you wanna go with a fixed head, hoosier daddy hit the nail on the head, Slick Trick it is.

I would think the more compact, the better you would be. I would look into a mechanical.

why so one of the blades snag open and you get eratic flight......... i would stay with a small diameter razor sharp fixed blade

Why go to a wide blade a hit off a branch and deflect your arrow? No matter what fixed blade you use it will be at least 2x lager diameter

I use fix blades, to many variables involved in mechanical. blades open in flight, razors bust off on the fisrt bone you hit so in reality your shooting a deer with a field point ect... No thanks, not worth the risk. sharp fixed blades

To each his own. I have never had an issue with any mechanical or fixed blade. I just prefer mechs but I see your point but my steelheads shatter bone although you are correct that many mechs are not as effective on bone.

i have killed deer with both, had good blood trails with both. i think the broadhead debate is over-rated. too many variables when u shoot a deer, and people blame broadheads all the time. throw a razor blade attached to a weight through an animal, it is gonna do damage. use mech's per instructions, they are not going to open on you.
sharpen your blades on your fixed blades, and they are gonna cut for you. simple as that

I haven't shot a deer yet with a bow. This will be my second season hunting period and it will be all bow this season. I had a mechanical screwed on all season last season and after really starting to get seriouse about bow hunting and hunting period, I decided I wanted to know without a doubt that my broadhead is going to work. I switched to Carbon Express Quad pros and while tuning I bent two furrels on the stupid things. I passed through my 3D taget and hit the dirt with both of them and they bent. I have switched to the new NAP Thunderead Razors. I really like them so far. I guess I will know better come first deer.

    Arrow shafts

Got the sportsmans guide catalog. Is there anything wrong with the gold tip trophy taker hp arrows that they have on sale for $44.97?

I've used thunderheads for nearly 20 years, and have never had one come even slightly loose, let alone unscrew enough for a blade to fall out.
