So my wife and I are looking at getting a King Charles cavalier puppy. Does anybody know if this breed would make a good blood trailing dog? How do you go about training? Any info is greatly appreciated!

Any dog with a good nose will make a solid blood tracking dog.

I am thinking about getting a Catahoula Leopard (type of Cur)

Take a look at the Texas Bowhunters website. They have a thread designed for blood tracking. I am interested also, and just ordered a book about training from the suggestions on the website. Take a look there is great advice on it.

I own a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog that I have trained to blood track deer, he has been awesome at this BUT with that said I did my research on the breed and found a dog with a pedigree and lineage that were proven blood trackers, First and formost the breed is n0t a good fit for just anyone. THIS DOG NEEDS A JOB!!!!! Its not a good fit for apartment life or just a family back yard dog, it need s alot of exercise and mental stimulation or it can become your worst enemy and destruvtive.
The breed is known to be Very intelligent, high energy, territorial, aggresive, stuborn, pack oriented and wanting to please.
I choose a dog from a breeder whom owned his mother and his mother was a proven blood tracker as well as his grandmother was a proven blood tracker, his sire was a hog hunting dog from texas.
He has been highly successful at blood tracking ( he tracked and recovered his first deer at 5 months of age and tracked and recovered 3 deer by the time he was 6 months of age... but you as the handler need just as much training if not more to be successful at deer blood tracking yourself. Now keep in mind if you want to get into tracking for others and not just your own deer you may have to sacrifice your own time hunting to go track for others ( I comitted to this last year and I never tagged a buck last year because I wanted to track a deer with the dog more than I wanted to tag a buck) and I dont regret that decision one bit. He has now tracked and recovered 7 deer by the time he was 1.5 years old and it has been a blast, I love tracking with him.
Just want to see you find the right dog that fits with you to be successfull.

Lots of good info here, accomodate the dog before expecting the dog to accomodate you.
