A friend of mine shot a really nice buck this evening. The shot was far back. He said the shot hit the center of his body. He said the deer hunched up after it ran about 80 yards then walked off he said he had a decent blood trail. Based on that i thought he hit liver and after he looked at an anatomy picture of a deer online that's what he thought too. It was a far shot. He backed out and is going back in the morning. Based on this picture where did he hit the deer?

After seeing this picture he sent me of the blood trail I'm not sure if that's liver hit blood or not. What do you guys think?

Hard to tell in the picture but the exact same thing happened to me about 5 years ago I had shot a Deer too far back the deer jumped and arched his back and slowly walked away. Honestly I don't know if it was liver or what but I waited about 2 hrs and found him within 100 yards.

Was he able to find his arrow? That should tell you a lot more.

Wherever the hit, I'd wait overnight especially with the deer walking off slowly.

Can you post a smaller picture? That might help. :)

That's a joke, but it really is hard to tell in that pic. Even if you click on it the size makes it pretty hard to see. My first thought is it looks a little like muscle blood. But again it's hard to tell from that pic. As someone else asked did he find the arrow?

Backing out was the best thing he could have done. Hopefully the deer bedded down and expired quickly.

It does look like kind of like muscle to me too just based on this picture but based on where he said his arrow hit and the reaction of the deer after the shot it could be liver.....He told me that the deer had the arrow in him for a little ways before it fell out of the exit hole. He never went in the thicket after him just checked the blood trail out on the field and where he saw him stop. He said the arrow had a lot of blood on it. He left the arrow at the last place he found blood.

That's the best pic that I have. He said that the blood was thicker than a lung hit deer.

I hit liver on a deer this year went about 90 yards and bedded, good call to back out. Follow the drops you'll find him. Can't tell a lot from the picture though.

Hunched up is also a sign of a gut shot deer...might have caught some of the intestines.

Hard to say without seeing to arrow. If he hit the deer center mass there wouldn't be a lot of muscle to hit unless he was really high and clipped the loins. If he's gut shot there should be some guts/grease on the arrow and it would have an unattractive odor. That doesn't always tell the story though. I hit my buck about a 10" back this year, just missing the last rib. It was a straight gut shot deer, but I was fortunate enough to clip a major artery. I did not break the diaphragm at all, but the artery let him bleed internally and he was dead at 80 yards. Left him lay overnight as I knew it was a terrible hit. I was fortunate, hopefully your buddy will have the same fate.

I helped my Buddy track him. We found him. Didn't go 150 yards. He hit him in the artery by the back leg and it exited a little farther forward through the gut. Blood trail was pretty good and he did cross his blood trail once and it got us confused a little but we found him.
