Hey guys today i shot a deer with a rifle due to the fact that i need to put some meat i the freezer. It was a doe so i'm not super worried about finding it, but i just thought you guys could give me help on what kind of shot this was. I just started bow hunting this year so i have yet to shoot one with an arrow, and every deer i've harvest with a gun has dropped or gone 20 yards and dropped. So it's technically my first trail. I shot her at about 100 yards using a 30/30 at she dropped right away and started shaking a little like normal. But after 5 minutes or so she started to limp and fall and did this for about 10 yards or so. She then got behind a tree and there was no way possible for me to get a second shot on her. I figured she would die with in 20 minutes or so and next thing i know she goes 120 yards across the road and into another field and into a bunch of trees. After waiting awhile i went on the blood trail ad where i shot her there was a fair amount of blood and then a few other spots within 5 yards. There was nothing for about 50 yards and then a few more drops i found along a fence line. Then i found nothing. So, being a beginner, where did my shot hit? My buddy who's bowhunted for 10 years thought it was possibly a leg shot but i really don't know. Help on this would be appreciated! Thanks guys.
That sounded worse than i thought it would. By that i mean if it was a buck i would be going crazy by not finding it, but since its a doe i'm not quite as worried as i could be. But i am definitely wanting to find her!
Really.....wow....this way of thinking is just odd to me....what a shame:banghead: Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
I'm not like that it's just a way of saying it i guess, didn't mean it like that at all. I'm just wanting to know if you guys think it was a leg shot and if so how far do you think she went.
Not really worried? This is what gives hunted a bad rep. You are taking an animals life. whether it be a big buck or just a measly doe, you should commit as much time and be just as concerned. With that being said, sounds like your buddy is right. Get out and keep looking.
Even with a gun you dont wait 20 mins before a tracking job. She would have been dead long ago with no pressure. What color was the blood?
Go find your doe..then post what you know. Search hard and try not to bump it. It may have and sounds like a bad hit. Finish the job.
It could be a gut shot just as easily as a leg hit based on the info given. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and not rag on you for the "not worried" comment. Did you find any stomach content at the POI along with the blood? What did the blood look like, where were you aiming, did you check your rifle? Can't tell you where you hit it for sure based on what was described, I doubt Daniel Boone could pull that off. Deer ca nact like that shot in a lot of places. My landlord shot a doe this year and even my dog and I couldn't find it but he swore he knocked her down and her hind legs didn't work well when she got up and he missed a second shot. My dog found blood where she climbed a big hill and then nothing. Well today I had her on a trail camera and she had a hole below her spine basically right through the low portion of her backstrap but she was walking around in front of th feeder like nothing had happened. They are amazing critters.... In short, you may find her or she may be fine. If you find stomach contents at the point of impact then she's gutshot and probably won't make it. Good luck, if she's mortally wounded I hope you find her.
Slugger- More of a darker red, not very bright. And yes i'm searching in the morning, i'll post my finding tomorrow sometime.
Great news! Went looking early this morning, started from where i shot here and slowly tracked seeing a dot or two of blood every 10 yards or so. Went on the neighbors land where i last saw her dive into some trees. After about 75 yards into the trees, there she lay. Looks like she came to a sliding stop so i guess her leg finally gave completely out. While i gutted her and after cleaning it was indeed a leg shot, shot must of dropped a little more than i took in account for. So after 2 hours of tracking and about 400 yards later i finally have some meat in the freezer.
Glad to hear u found it. Any time u shoot a deer do anything and everything that u can to find it. Good job getting it done.
Just a word of advice, any animals life should be respected and every effort should be made to recover your game. I'm glad you found her, but I wouldn't guess the problem was the bullet dropping too much on a 100 yard shot with a 30/30. You should be sighted in at 100 yards with that already. More than likely you pulled the shot, which happens if you tense at the shot. Stay relaxed and breath. Good luck.
Thanks very much guys. I did want to make an apology for the "not worried" comment, that was stupid to say. I respect any animals life and I do not sleep right if i don't have some sort of closure from the animal. I just want you guys to know i'm not some sick city boy hunter that just wants the big racks. I hunt to put meat in the freezer for myself and my family all around. Never been a guy about getting the monster buck, i'm about the challenge and the rush you get from shooting any type of game. Thankyou
Congrats, where's the victory picture, can't have a good post without pictures. Everyone likes pictures, reading is time consuming. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Never even got a picture with her, all i got is her hanging after being gutted and skinned. After we found it my dad and I gutted and skinned her quick because my sister got her first buck of her life so i went to help her with it. Pretty proud of her!
