I was walking the dog in the woods tonight looking for morels when a doe stood up about 30 yards away. We froze and she eventually looked away. Thinking she maybe had a fawn laying right there, I tied the dog to a tree and started walking towards her and she watched me the whole way until I stopped again at 10 yards. Again her eyes began to drift, but I could tell she was nervous. I took a step and she bolted right past me and straight into a tree. Picked herself up and ran in tight circles a few times and stopped again. I decided to back off and when I moved again she bolted into a log and tripped over it and fell over. Poor thing was completely blind. She looked fairly healthy but had a glaze over her eyes. She perked up if she heard a stick snap or anything out of the ordinary but otherwise stared straight ahead, head down and tail tucked between her legs. I didnt have a gun and wouldnt have been able to get back with one until after dark, then again is it my place to play mother nature? Either way I hate the thought of her being brought down by coyotes. Nature at its cruelest I guess.
It is natural to have that deer taken by predators. If there were no men around that is what would happen. Don't let it get to you. In a way that part of nature can be beautiful too, just like the natural part of man taking animals for food.
Cool Story MN..the fact that she's survived into adulthood, is testament to her ability to cope. I believe letting nature take it's course is the right action in this situation.
I wonder If she didn't become blind just lately? Man that Is sad, a guys gotta feel for these animals. Like you said Craig, mother nature Is one mean SOB!!
Hey, if you enter the contest this year... That should be an easy 50 points!!! :D :D okay, okay, I'm kidding.
Now you probably know how Helen Keller felt - come on guys, someone has to joke about it! Very rare experience for sure...
I'm guessing it just happened very recently because she didnt act like she was coping very well and the bed she got out of was extremely hard packed so I think she had laid there a while. This area borders state park property so its not uncommon for some adult does to reach 10 years+. Odd to see a typically sharp animal so helpless.
