BRISTOL — A dead black bear was found along Indiana 15, just north of the Indiana Toll Road, on Wednesday, apparently the victim of a car accident, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. It marked the first bear sighting in northern Indiana since 2015, when a black bear from Michigan wandered through Berrien, St. Joseph and LaPorte and counties — at that time the first wild bear sighting in Indiana in 144 years. Michigan DNR officials killed that bear in the spring of 2016 near Stevensville, saying it had become a threat to humans. Indiana DNR mammalogist Brad Westrich said a motorist noticed the recent bear just north of Bristol on Wednesday morning. It’s unclear how long the animal had been dead, he said Friday. https://www.southbendtribune.com/st...a-department-of-natural-resources/8217848002/
that's a lot of open land for a bear to cross to get to Elkhart from MI. I hunt near Sawyer so I know the terrain, and also up near Mt. Pleasant and I have never seen any sign even up north.
as they said, two bears in the last several years now .. the first one was about 10 miles east/ne from a place where I hunt ... bear, elk, bison all used to be pleniful here .. a buddy of mine just caught a bobcat here this past coyote season. The DNR came out, took pics (female) and helped release it .. always heard rumors of them being around since I ws a kid ... another was road killed here about 5 yrs prvious in another portion of the county ... now that the Dunes Nat. Lakes Shore is now the Dunes National Park, I wonder if the population will grow here ... Ive got cams out where that one Bob was caught, I would love to get a Bob on a cam .. ..
We have a lot of bobcat down here in Bloomington and Martinsville. I figured they’d get bored trying to cross all those corn fields and flat land to get up North though. Maybe they’re just trying to go up to 18th st brewery to get good beer.
Only bobcat I have ever seen while hunting was in Huntington County. Had a den near a series of ravines I liked to hunt. Seen her or her mate several times so there was no doubt it wasn't just a big tomcat. That was like 25 years ago. F, I am getting old.
We have bobcat on our farm in Jackson county. I have seen them in daylight several times and have cam pictures of them.
Geez guys reading your post has me thinking I can't imagine. I can't imagine not having those and many other animals around. Though I wouldn't mind coyotes and raccoon moving away.
here is the Bobcat my buddy caught and released .... nice female ... ... I have a treestand location about 100yds back in from this spot ... I was working when it was released otherwise I'd have been there ... cool kitty .. he uses #3 Coilsprings/offset-padded jaws because of dogs and house cats in the area ...
