Me and my cousin where out mushroom hunting and found some large prints with claws retracted. They where old and I didn't think much of it just thinking it might be someones big dog. Today my dad and uncles saw two jet black cats running slow across a pasture near where we had been mushroom hunting. Behind them was a dog chasing after them. I think they planned to lure him into the woods and take him down. With a low deer population I'm scared for the herd. They say that two of them can kill 200 deer in a year. I'm not sure how afraid to be but I will carry a shotgun and put a camera out there. And i think my neighbor is going to missing a dog. Any knowledge on the subject?
Where are you located? I'd be more scared walking to my stand... Hard to see a black panther in the dark. One easy way to tell if you have a problem: Go bowfishing because it is awesome Take your carp to you land Put a trail camera over the pile of fish Every predator in your area will make an appearance. I would also think that since panthers are rather high on the totempole, they wont be worried very many things, namely your scent. Show us your new Kitty Kats
Also, claws retracted always means cats. Dogs and dog family members cannot retract claws so there will always be claw marks in wet soft soil. I would think that having two means a male and a female, which would leave me to believe there will be babies. the babies will have a den. Find the den and you will eventually find the parents. Im guessing the den will be in the woods you talked about. If they are actually panthers im guessing they were leading the dog towards the den so that they didnt have to drag it as far to the babies if there are babies. If your daring you could take a climber stand into the woods, track them back to the den, and get in a tree and wait for the parents to come back. Remember to bring a gun, and remember cats can climb. And remember they are black and masters of tracking, and killing, so Id advise that you get in, and get out before the sun even thinks about going away
I thought for sure it was going to be a story about these guys... but then I remembered that was in Philly. All jokes aside, my pup is 70lbs (and will get to about 100) and he has MONSTER paws. I keep his nails trimmed really short so he won't screw up the wood floors. He rarely leaves claw marks in the ground unless it's really muddy or he is running. I sincerely doubt two actual feline black panthers would run from one dog. Also, cougars (not the Naperville divorcee kind) and panthers are solitary ambush hunters. They usually attack from behind, so the whole "luring" theory is kind of iffy at best.
Ive also heard of a lot of people thinking black cats are black panthers at 400 yards away, and coyotes are wolves. Not saying your wrong but just keep that in the back of your head.
