Today was the MI turkey opener. The Bitter- Set up in the AM, didn't hear a single gobble. Packed it up early and decided to go check the cams at the property we deer hunt on. Didn't think to bring our bows- big mistake!! I was checking a cam and not even 40 yards away, two gobbles rang out behind a brush line. We hopped in our ground blind we left up from last deer season, and I let out a few yelps from my pot call I had in my pack. Not even 5 minutes later 2 toms and 2 hens were right on top of us. Watched them for about 25 minutes at 20 yards then we decided we needed to get out of there and get our bows. We crawled on our hands and knees out the back of the blind and made it to where the birds couldnt see us, all without getting busted! We ran back home, grabbed the decoys and the bows, and headed back out to set up. Birds were long gone and we only heard 1 gobble the rest of the day. We called it at 5:00. The Sweet- Got some awesome live turkey calling practice in, spent some quality time with my dad, and got to watch some of God's most beautiful creatures! All in all, pretty good day. Just thought I'd share how my opener went, we will be back at it next weekend. Here are some pics of the toms we saw, this was the best I could do with my iphone.
Nice. I always bring a bow with me anywhere I go in the woods for any reason while a season is open. Never know when things like this will happen.
I know... Worst part is we were debating whether or not to bring our bows. We decided not to because we would just be in and out with the cards. Never thought I'd get within 25 yards of a gobbler and not even know it...
