I dont really have many regrets. This season was one that i will cherish forever. My son Trent killed his first buck with a bow. That in itself would make the season. I also arrowed a very nice buck and with a couple doe kills to top it off, this season is one filled with memories. We also started filming each other for the first time. That will be something to look back on in future years and put a smile on my face. Not really a regret but the only dissapointment was not being able to shoot a very nice 8pt late season. Passed on many good bucks waiting for him. Didnt work out but he will be around next year.
My biggest regret was not hunting the timber during the rut. In both of my spots we have huge corn fields to hunt over... I am always drawn to the edge of them - you can see more - more deer, tracks etc. But experience, trail cameras, etc have taught me the big bucks cruise the timber. From doe bedding area to doe bedding area. GET IN THE TIMBER! Additionally I was hesitant to change spots - I got everything set up in the summer and didn't want to make any changes mid-season. But I think it cost me... be willing to move!
After having to take the last 7 years off, it was awesome just being in the woods again! My biggest regret for 2010 was not putting enough effort into finding land to hunt. Whether it be gaining permission or finding a lease, I didnt try hard enough before the opener. However, I do have one thing that happened that I dont regret in the slightest! The first shot opportunity of the year was on a little one sided 4 point from the ground. Had him broadside at 6 yards for an eternity, got him on film, and I let him walk. Tough to do when its been 7 years since Ive been able to hunt!
My biggest regret (or should I say disappointment) was my New Mexico Elk hunt. Given that we drew a quality tag I unfornatuley had the luck of dealing with individuals that are just not people that care to much about there clients. 2010 was a great year and wish I could of spent more time with friends in the field because really when you think about it, that is what it's all about.
