I just got the broadheads in for my water buffalo sticks; AWESOME!!!

The heads are 315 grain and they're going on FMJ 250 Dangerous Game shafts for a total 930 grain arrow with 18% FOC. I may pull the 100 grain inserts out of them and go with a standard aluminum insert to gain a little speed. I think an 840 grain arrow would still be plenty.

Rob - thanks for posting! Those are some logs...your bow ought to be whisper quiet shooting those.

Out of your 80lb limbs - what kind of KE are you talking?:)

Is the purpose of "single bevel" just more rigid, or does it carry a better edge?

    Good Luck with 'em!

    Rob,

I found that quiver you were looking for:

It needs to be red though-with maybe some flames running down the side. It can double as a game hauler.

    Looking good!

Matt, This'll be my first experience with the single bevel. They're known for having a better (sharper and stronger) edge.

KE for this combo is actually pretty low (44 lb ft) due to the low arrow velocity (150 fps). This just goes to show that KE isn't a good measure of penetration force. Momentum is a better gauge.

I've decided to drop the arrow weight by 90 grains (to 840) by switching from the brass to an aluminum insert. I figure the 315 grain heads put plenty of weight up front already and the extra 25 fps may just keep a 40 yard pin in my sight ring.

Awesome Will! At the end of a hot, dry day you can load me in and wheel me back to camp for a cold one!

Single bevels are also very well known for breaking bones (big bones).

single bevels will also continue rotating(right bevel=right twist, or clockwise) after entering the animal. causing significantly more damage, and a very devastating wound channel. double bevel found on most other broadheads stop rotating and cause a slight loss of energy on impact.

Thought I'd update this thread. I got the new 80 lb. limbs installed and dialed in finally. I was expecting from all the ballistic calculators I've been toying with to get about 175 fps out of these telephone poles. Wasn't I shocked when the chronograph spit out a speed of 213fps!!!

    2009 Z28 (with 2011 100 deflection limbs) @ 29.5" and 79#.
840 grain arrow at 213 fps.

For those that asked that's 85 lb. ft. of KE but the significant number is that it's 179K grain fps of momentum!

The ballistic calculators are way off for this arrow but I think it's because of the extreme weight. The greater weight the arrow has the more efficient the system becomes at transferring energy to it. Apparently the formulas fail to take this increased efficiency into account as the arrow weight increases. They calculate the decrease in speed versus increased weight as linear, which it's not.

It's awesome watching them smack the snot out of my Rhinehart 18-1 target when they hit.

    Rob,
That's just impressive! That's about as close as you can get to "full confidence" with bow in hand and staring at a Water Buff:)

Are those things as sharp as they claim? I would guess that a single bevel would hold that edge a little better as well.
