Nothing like putting the pressure on someone. lol I vote Shultzy he was close last year. My second pick would be anyone on here that is genuinely happy with the deer they harvest. A huge doe or a cool looking spike they are all trophys!
I would agree.. the combination of lots of ground to roam.. and the area he lives in.. and his determination certainly makes Shed a threat every year. Given.
NY Bowhunter and............... hmmmm I can't really think of anyone else. I'll just pick that guy.:p
Guys thanks for some fun reponses, this thread is just for fun, nothing seious about it at all. Just some fun post without all the drama and a little dreaming of good will for our fellow hunters. The odds are not in favor of it happing, but it happen to this guy in the most unlikely place in MI. I have hunted and been to NewBerry. Step Dad's sister lives and hunts there. http://www.freep.com/article/20081211/SPORTS10/812110394/15-point-buck-was-picture-perfect
I bet it will be a crazy farmer or somebodys grandma from either iowa or wisconsin hahaha....it seem like its always those lucky folks that get the big ones!
To my friends that give me a vote of confidence I thank you. Seeking out and killing a state record whitetail for me would be the ultimate accomplishment in my home state. Its funny, I'd rather kill a 170 net typical here which would be the archery state record...than kill a 190 net typical in Iowa or Saskatchewan, not that I wouldnt love that as well... Its just that these mountains, my home turf and these bucks mean that much to me, they have challenged me in ways that have forced me to be a much better hunter than when I first started bowhunting whitetails...Killing the state record, I will be honest, I believe having both archery state records is something I want to do, anyway its a goal that drives me daily. I believe wholeheartedly and Lord willing, that I will get my chance if I do my part. Whether it will actually happen is up to a greater power and I am ok with how it all plays out. I just know when I am dead that I dont want to leave this earth with regrets in anything in life including my passion for hunting whitetails. Good luck to all, how cool would that be if anyone of us killed a state record class buck. It would be very cool and there are definately guys reading this post right now that are onto bigger bucks, closer or maybe even the new state records than what I have on my hitlist, I am hoping this spring/summers scouting reveals that kind of deer, if not, I will continue to seek out and hunt new country (which I am fortunate to have endless miles of it, public yes, but huge country) and areas that have produced those types of deer.
Top 10 ish in the state.. Hmmm I am gonna have to look at all the state records and get back to you guys on this one! Some of you guys have some real mountains to climb, especially in those great "big buck" states like Iowa, Kansas and Illinois .. were the bar is set so stinking high due to the caliber of bucks that roam those states! Then again they are there.
The odds of anyone taking a top ten bucks are pretty slim in any state, in all honesty MI has the best chance IMO Lower hunter numbers, a ban on baiting is going to mean more bucks survive. MI top Archery buck is 181 7/8. anyone got a guess on what the odds are?
Astronomical???? For some states, I think a person has a better chance at winning the lottery tha.n they do of putting down a top 10
How much can we screw around with the definition of 'top ten'. If I get a buck in 2010, it would probably be one of the top ten biggest Illinois bucks taken this year by woman... who's half Japanese and Black Foot Indian....and also is president of a bowfishing club and who owns a black lab named Circe. I'm almost sure of it. Otherwise.... I'm toast. :D
LOL, I love it. Christine, my dad used to think he was part Black Foot Indian for many years on his fathers side. But some to find out it was Sioux. I think that tribe used to roam the upper northwest, correct? Considering the 45,000 acres I hunt has produced maybe a 150 inch buck since it has been open for hunting over the past 60-70 years, I believe my chances at cracking a Virginia top 10 buck are around .00000000123%.
Wait, the chances of someone here killing a top ten in their state is really, really, really, really, really, low? What!? Hmmm...I thought there was a record book buck behind every tree in states like Illinois and Iowa. Guess they must have cut all the trees down. It was just for fun dudes. Stop being so pessimistic!
Whats sad is, I could (in theory anyway) kill a 170 gross and not get in the top 10 in my county. Location location location. :D
If you assumed a normal bell curve distribution of the size of all bucks killed in a state, wouldn't it theoretically be equal odds of reaching the top 10, regardless of state? And is this top 10 all time or top 10 that year? A top 10 all time could skew the chances easier/harder if a state's management program, hunter numbers, or deer population changed significantly at some point in time.
