I've decided to buy a hang on stand, are sticks or the screw in steps the best way up there? I'll be hunting public land so I can't leave anything up permanently

If you cant leave anything up, without a doubt get sticks! I cant imagine screwing in 20 of those damn screw in steps every time I went hunting, just to have to take them back out when I went home. You will thank yourself when you see how convenient sticks are.

Might check the regulations on the public land you're on too. Around my area, you aren't allowed to use anything that screws into a tree or pierces the bark. So its climber or sticks all the way for me! And they both have their place. But even if you can use steps, if you're not leaving it up get some lone wolf sticks! Good luck man

No question on this one! You would have to get out in the woods a good 1-2 hours earlier then planned to put in those darn pegs. In IL you aren't allowed to screw anything in to a tree so it isn't even an options for me on public land. Sticks vs. Climber really depends on your hunting area. I first bought a climber then quickly learned that most of my trees have a ton of small branches going up or are not quite straight so I switched to sticks and love them!

In MN it is illegal to use screw in steps on public land. Sticks are easier and quicker IMO anyway.

I made a attachment for a hand held drill to screw those screw in steps, works wonders. 10 seconds a step. But i only use them for private land.

That is the only way I would do that and I wouldn't be out in the woods in the morning before a hunt running it!

I remember the day when screw in steps was about the only way to get up the tree. As far as I'm concerned nothing beats a climbing stick for safety, ease of set-up, and just plain less aggrivation. Sticks all the way.

sticks - climber is to noisy to me for any walk in(always pretty thick getting where I hunt) and then climbing too - even one clunk can ruin the hunt for that particular buck...course you gotta worry about the noise anyway with sticks to. But definitely no screw ins - illegal for most areas and damages trees I'd rather harvest later as well.

I had that thought when I first started hunting until I realized the trees where I hunt have so many branches and aren't very straight. Climbers in my area are useless. Had to go to sticks and been happy ever since.

Like everyone else said, sticks or a climber. I opted for a climber. Quick, quiet, and easy to carry.

Of course no one could manage without sticks. You can't manage with screws in public hunting.

A climber would be worthless where I hunt, I don't have any straight, limbless trees that I could use it on. I have both ladder sticks and screw in steps on my place. The sticks are a way better option when you can use them, but I have one set up that would be just about impossible, so I use the screw in steps on it.

On some ground at a place i hunt, (has heavy pedestrian traffic by the way, not by choice) i choose a hang on stand with screw in steps. Except I dont screw the steps in everytime, i set em up up before season and usually take the bottom 2-3 out so no one can climb it. Best way to go for my situation IMO

I find it interesting hearing from other parts of the country and what the preferred method of climbing is. Here in PA, a climber works 99% of the time because its mostly oak trees with few or no limbs until you hit the 25ft or greater height. Midwest, well, climbers are almost worthless is most cases because of the trees. The southeast can get away with a climber the majority of the time as well.

To the OP. Think about the types of trees in your area. Do they have a lot of low limbs that would prevent you from using a climber? If so, then the obvious answer is sticks and a hang on.
