Finding out your kid has been blessed with a sharp mind. My 7 year old is in the 2nd grade. In the 1st grade he was bumped into advanced reading and advanced math, school calls it Spike program. A couple times a week he goes to these advanced classes for a couple hours. They have to "qualify" for it each year. This year in 2nd grade he was put into both again. Basically these Spike programs are just introducing kids to material that is one year ahead, so 3rd grade level reading and math for him as a 2nd grader. A couple weeks ago he came home with a note, his math Spike teacher said he was "easily grasping" the 3rd grade level math concepts she taught him and that she wanted to test him for a "gifted and talented" (G&T) program. It is basically an hour long test that compares his scores to other kids his age nationwide. If he qualifies, they use it to identify what he's strongest in and then use that info to determine what learning material will best compliment his strong points. They use his strong points to further his learning in that subject and also to structure his learning of other subjects. He took the test late last week. The G&T teacher called me yesterday to discuss how he did. She explained that the test is three areas, verbal comprehension, non-verbal comprehension, and math/problem solving. It is heavily weighted in the math/problem solving portion. She said his scores are a percentage in comparison to other kids nationwide of a similar age, and that to qualify for the G&T program he needed to get a cumulative score of 90% or better. So that would mean only the kids that score in the top 10% nationwide in the same age range get into this program. (Shoot, I'm excited that he has the smarts to even be considered to take this test! Whether he qualifies or not). The G&T teacher was very excited about his math/problem solving score, he scored a 99%, which is in the top 1%! Cumulatively he scored a 95% on the whole test. She said he's the youngest she's ever seen qualify for the program in our area. I'm so excited for him, I hope it is a good program that will help to take him places in life. This follows him all through junior high and high school. Pretty darn proud dad.
Congrats! Here in Arkansas the GT program starts in 3rd grade. My oldest has been in it since then and is now in 5th. He also qualified for EAST program; Education Accelerated by Service and Technology. Having your kid in these advanced programs is awesome. One challenge we have run into with our son is that he is super competitive and has to be the best at everything. That can lead to some challenges when he comes up short. It can also cause boredom with regular class learning that is not challenging. The advanced programs may also cause some jealousy with siblings. It is an awesome opportunity for your son, congrats again!
If you enlarge screen just a little some colors show...really is beautiful right now. That said hubby had to use my giant stainless spatula to pry my car doors open...lol
Dang that Sota is a taskmaster... Thought he said it was a couple months before the ice would be gone...
haha. @Sota can come buy this for his next project boat. Getting rid of my FIL’s boat that has been parked for the last 12 years.
If the engine ran I would. It has been sitting unused for 12 years. The last time it ran, my FIL and I ended up getting towed back to the dock. He never fixed it and it has sat rusting in the heat and humidity ever since. I have nowhere to keep it at my place and we are getting the property ready to sell.
Working on my wedding video tonight, instead of hiring a videographer we just sent GoPros amuck in the crowd. Ended up being really good. Obviously not a profession type job but I can hack out something our kids will never want to watch, lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I saw your post on Facebook. That’s a really cool idea. Like that a lot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Made backstraps again. Same way I did last time. 100% convinced this is the best cut of meat anyone could ever have. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
i do not have the time or the interest it doing that. I need fewer headaches and other people’s problems to solve, not more.
