You always see threads on here on where's the best state to take big bucks. I've really never saw a thread asking where's the best state to just hunt deer. Numbers I'm thinking will have allot to do with It so what Is the best state to just hunt deer period?
My guess would be Texas.. since they have like 35 million deer. Only thing that would bug me coming from the midwest is the Texas deer body weight.. which is about as big as my pops Labrador.
I know that Va has about 1.3 million deer and we can kill 3 bucks and as many does as we want to buy tags for...and we are allowed to kill 2 deer daily.....so what does that say about the Va? We have an ass load of deer and especially the female type!
Another vote for Texas. I think i remember hearing they have around 4 million deer. MN has about 1 million deer, but our deer are twice the size :D
I would take quality over quantity anyday. We have more than enough deer here in southern MI. I have not hunted any other states so I can't say for sure which is "best". Kansas, Iowa and Wisconsin have always intrigued me because of the quality of deer and the terrain is quite a bit different than what I hunt here.
Right here in some parts of Michigan I have had over 20 shot opportunities in a day, and seen over 300 yarded up in fields befor. Killing a deer is not a problem, killing one with some bone on its head is where the work starts.
Plus in MI, Wis, Minn you get to hunt differnet areas. Big woods, farm deer, open country and swamps. Plus the fall weather is perfect hunting weather
Anywhere I could slip out of my house and into the woods with a decent amount of deer. THAT would be my best spot. If/when I own land one day I will be the happiest guy in the world, regardless of the state.
I would never pick Texas. They may have lots of deer, but good luck getting access to decent areas without mortgaging the house...from my buddies account of things down there. Whatever place had long seasons & low hunter numbers would get my vote. And compared to PA that is pretty much most every state except michigan.
While I will be broadening my horizons beginning with Illinois this year, Ohio next year and if it all works out, Montana the year after, I wouldn't trade my Missouri hunting for anything. Not yet, anyway.
Wyoming in Aug - Oct. And there are a lot of animals there to hunt with a bow. It also has every little bow hunting pressure in Wyoming. The permits are cheap and you can get multiple tags. Then I would snowbird it and go to Texas and hunt the rest of the year for many different animals. There is more to bow hunting than deer.
Georgia, in may part anyway. 25 minutes from the house, bow only county. The only worry is will a subdivision be there when you arrive to hunt.
I like Iowa, I got to enjoy a week out there. there are Deer everywhere and there all big even the does.
I'm with you, Frank. Personally, I wouldn't trade Ohio for anything. But if I had to, Iowa would be the one.
