I looked at the halo. I didn't like that it wasn't water proof. Any problems there?

I have the Bushnell ARC 1000, its never let me down. Its a great tool to help you learn to judge distance so eventually you don't need one (for bowhunting). We definitely use it to set up tagets for practice.

The Bushnell Primos Truth Edition range finder seems pretty good for me. Liking the idea of that one. Reading some reviews it seems like some people have had trouble in the rain, and ranging through trees. Do any other rangefinders in that $180 range have these problems?

I have the new Nikon Archers Choice. I like it very much. Non cluttered screen, quick ranging one my biggest like is that it is waterproof.

My dad has a Bushnell Bowhunter Chuck Adams and it great for the price. However it is not waterproof and he got his wet this past year and it fogged up and got water inside the lenses. They replaced it under warranty after several calls about to explain that it got wet I rain and wasn't submerged. I originally thought the Rain Guard was some sort of waterproofing but it is not. I don't think much of their Rain Guard claim, as long as you are aware of the rain issue, the Chuck Adams is a great little range finder though.

Leupold Rx1000i TBR is the best rangefinder on the market as far as compact units go.... Love mine. Red numbers are easy to see even in the pitch dark, works beyond archery ranges which is helpful when stalking in on animals out west, and is accurate in any weather conditions you throw at it.

My issue with the red is that it's so bright in dark conditions that you can see the crosshairs, but not what you're aiming at. In bright, snow covered landscapes, they're not bright enough. :D Still, I like the red better than the black. Ideally, they'd have come out with a way to switch colors. That would be awesome.

I have one....works well. Survived a 25 drop from a tree stand. And it's also been through the wash when I left it in a jacket pocket....it's works fine.
Only thing it could be is a little brighter and i would rather red read outs then black...that said it ranges well, no problem with 400-600 yard readings.

I have the Halo also and it is water resistant. I have had it out in both rain and snow and it has never given me any problems as far as that. It probably wouldn't hold up to being fully submerged under water, but like I said for what I use it for and how much I paid for it I can't complain.

Thanks for the mini review. That is helpful. In the northwest I happen to hunt in the rain fairly often and don't want to buy something that wont hold up.

Yeah I've ran into the issue of it being a bit bright a few times myself, but it is MUCH less frustrating to deal with than having to range and then point up to the sky to even be able to see the reading, lol. Switching back and forth sounds awesome in theory, wonder if that is the next trick they come out with...

I can't remember which one it was, but I just read about one that switches... Nikon maybe? I will look.

The new Nikon Archers choice allows the use to turn the red lighting on and off. It is a nice feature, however in most situations that I have tried the red lighting in during low light conditions it made it too bright and I could see was the yardage and crosshairs. The red lighting made seeing the target difficult at times. That is my only complaint with Archers Choice though.

If money was no option: Leica... hands down.

On a budget: Vortex, Leupold, Nikon... in that order.

This is a photo from my Leica 1600 (only supposed to go to 1600). Keep in mind, this isn't a reflective object, it's a brushy hillside. Obviously this type of ranging isn't necessary for most tree stand archery hunters but it is super versatile.

Almost every one that I've seen had different levels of brightness, dim for dark, bright for light... :D

I grabbed a refurbished Nikon Rifle hunter 550 which I love for bow or gun hunting.
