I live in southeast MO. It's a pretty good area to live for a whitetail hunter, not the best, but pretty good. If I had the time, I could hunt three states regularly. I do hunt in southern IL in addition to MO, and it's a 30 minute drive to my hunting grounds there. If I chose to hunt western KY, I could be there in 45 minutes from my house in MO. Like I said, it's a pretty good place to live...lots of tags and some pretty good deer in all three regions of these states. IMO, the best place to live would be southeast IA. There, you're guaranteed an IA tag and you could jump across the border to northeast MO and over to western IL as well. World class deer in all three regions of these states. That would be my pick for the best place to live as a whitetail hunter. Where's your whitetail paradise?
i have ok hunting but if i wanted to own some hunting ground either Pike County or some bottom ground near the river
I would say where I live is pretty decent, Adams and Pike county. If I had the ability to really take advantage of it I'm 20 mins from NE Missouri and about 45 to hour away from Keokuk (sp?) IA. I would think maybe a little more north of where I am would be good, closer to IA and WI and also still hit MO. Kansas wouldn't be too bad either. Biggest thing would be just to own the land in any of those areas.
central wi....I live here now and I don't think I could leave. Shawano county has an outstanding deer heard and 75% of the land owners in this area practice qdma
My whitetail paradise: I know this will sound like total b.s., but it's how I feel. Deer hunting for me is about a lot more than just killing a big one. Don't get me wrong it is what I dream about. Hunting where my Grandfather, Father and Brother have hunted feels good to me. I like the history and the stories that go with the land. If I was to choose my whitetail paradise, I would look no further than where I am. We hunt land that is average at best, but my hunts I would not trade for the best.
^ same. I hunt Michigan because that's where my family is, it's where I (halfway) grew up, and for me hunting is a family affair. I've passed up more little bucks than I can count, and never even seen anything on the hoof more than 130", but there are a few bruisers hanging around. My old man got a 167" 12 point 4 years ago, and the grin he had plastered on his face for 3 days was priceless. Mid Michigan hunting- 6 points all day, and 6 packs with the old man, my uncle and cousin around the fire at night. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
Although a cliche, I too would want to be with my family and friends, the size of deer doesn't matter as long as we are safe and having fun and getting meat. Now if it was about big bucks and dream hunts, I would have to say Kansas or Iowa.
I would say the same as the last three posts... At any rate, this place isn't a bad place to be at all. I can hunt MO and KS and both my counties have their fair share of trophies recorded in P&Y and B&C.
On the East coast, I'd say if there were anywhere I'd move it would be Maine. Nothing against Wisconson, but I prefer to live on the East coast.
Right where I am at here in Kansas. I can go a couple hours east and hit Missouri and northeast to Iowa or even Nebraska. Great deer population in all four states. Sent from my Windows Phone 8X by HTC using Tapatalk
Partial to Ohio myself, but that's pretty biased. My perfect place to hunt would be back on our family dairy farm that we no longer have. I really miss that place, for more reasons than just the hunting. I look back at when I was a young kid, excited for the first day of deer season, not knowing what oppurtunities might present themselves. I remember being in my stand, watching across the field for the school bus to stop and pick me up, only to close the door and keep driving. Brought a smile to my face every time. If I only knew then what I do know, I would have probably taken a lot more deer from that property! I'll make sure though that I make the time to teach my kids all the things I wish I knew at a young age. Nothing against my dad, he was a busy and hard working man that wasn't able to afford as much time with us as he would have liked, teaching things like hunting to us kids.
Probably Iowa for me. The only other state I've hunted in other than TN was Wisconsin. That was awesome.
Depends on what you are looking for. Whitetails where you can plant, manage, and alter the land as you see fit? I'd probably pick Iowa. Whitetails in open country, where you can also pursue elk & mulies? I'd look to the Badlands of SD. Whitetails in BIG woods wilderness, where you're fighting them on their own turf? Welcome to Ely
All depends on what you are stating as qualifying factors. Must Booners be possible each hunt, or seeing a deer? Do you care to hunt open spaces, hilly terrain or hardwoods? For me it's where ever I can sit up a tree and watch God's creation, with the chance of seeing something and hopefully something mature; inches don't mean a thing.
Montana or Wyoming. There's so much to see and a variety of game to chase all year round. Plus the fly fishing there is fantastic. I still love hunting in PA!
Planning on moving from NYC to southwest Mizzou this fall should be a bit of a change for the better!
