while it's not quite in my top-10; it's still a great movie and very under-rated. Comedy- Clerks Sports- Slap Shot Action- original Terminator Drama- Saving Private Ryan Thriller- North by Northwest to me, the most telling feature of a movie is how it stands up to modern society/amenities. Namely cell phones. (Period-specific does not apply.) Clerks and Slap Shot both stand up. (Neither would have their plots significantly affected if the characters had cell phones.) The rest are period flicks.
I am really going to date myself here but I grew up out in the country did not have cable. You could rent a VCR from the video store if you did not have one, this was early 80's. I still remember the first time I rented a VCR on a friday night. I rented Eddie Murphy Delerious and Richard Prior live on the sun set strip. The theater in town only had 1 screen so you had to wait for the movie you wanted to see.
Most of the ones that are already listed I would say make my list. It would be hard to narrow down the top one. My dad was a otr truck driver growing up so we literally have hundreds if not thousands on VHS, still, from back when that was a thing and I could list most of them. Couple haven't seen listed, Cowboys McClintock Magnificent 7 (original) Down periscope The edge 300 Sniper Heartbreak ridge Platoon Uncle buck Christmas vacation Good really go on and on ha. I know I'll take some heat for this but having two daughters it was essential that they both see and enjoy the Princess Bride.
