Shot this buck at about 25 yards on Halloween morning. Got in the stand about an hour before shooting light and fought from dozing off. It was about 7 AM before it was light enough to shoot. This guy was milling in the shadows behind a scrubby area. Trying to glass him to see what size he was before he moved out was difficult, so I ranged the area next to the thicket (where he would eventually step out to) and it read 28 yards to the ground. Around 7:30 he stepped out into the light, and I could see he was a 7 or 8 Pointer, and would easily be my best tag to date, if I could get the shot off. After the shot, He booked it up the side of the hill to the right. I immediately replayed the shot in my head, wondering if I shot high and missed. I could already see my lighted nock in the ground behind him as he ran away. He got to the top of the wooded hill, when I thought I was about to lose sight of him over the top. Just then, he fell backwards and went head over butt all the way down the hill until he hit a tree and stopped. I figured that was a pretty good sign it was a good shot and he was toast, but i still gave him 1/2 hour before I got down the stand. (I tried to recover a deer too early last year, and boy did I pay for that mistake). Anyway, I figured 7:30 AM wasn't too early for a victory cigar while I waited. He's not going to break any records, but he's the best Ive done in my 5 or more years (or so) of bow hunting. (and honestly only the second buck Ive taken with a bow)
Had a go ,any buck is a good buck with a bow, size means nothing, it's the hunt and enjoyment you get out it that matters. Again congrat's! Rocky
