Congrats on the deer and on the fact that a 40yd shot at a deer is a chip shot for you?

I like to practice out to 80. I feel that I can make an ethical shot at 50. I actually feel more comfortable at 40 than I do at 20. Call me crazy but I feel more concentrated at 40 yards. I take a shot closer than that for granted.

It is not just about how well you can shoot. At 40 yards the deer has that much more time to hear the shot and react causing a bad hit or a miss altogether. I will only take a shot over 30yds if the deer is totally unaware of my presence and relaxed.

Oh I agree. I wouldn't shoot at a deer unless I was completely confident that there are better odds of me putting an ethical shot on it than not. I've never been burned by taking a long shot and the deer ducking the arrow or moving. I'm sure the first time I do get burnt my opinions will change.
