How about going back to THE original guitar slinger... He influenced everybody. The guy came onto the scene in the late 60's and blew everyone's mind. Nobody did what he did back then. ...Nobody. The late, great, Jimi Hendrix... Live at Woodstock doing his unbelievable version of The Star Spangled Banner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gf6qZMwpo3k
These posts always crack me up... they are so subjective. The "best guitarist" label can't be handed out to one single person as each genre of music requires different guitar skills. Tom Morello, Slash, Hendrix, SRV, Synster Gates, Jimmy Page, Dimebag, Clapton, ect... they all have different styles and each one excels in their own genre.... trying to figure out the best of all genres is nothing but personal preferance.
SRV Jimi Hendrix Billy Gibbons In no certain order. I think about this a lot and I can not remember the last time I heard a guitar player with a notable "new" thing. 90% of the rock players got all their licks from these guys. They took Blues/Blood/Sweat/Tears/Distortion/Wah Pedal and became what they were.
the ORIGINAL guitar slinger.... Robert Johnson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd60nI4sa9A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8hqGu-leFc this guy was further ahead of his time than Hendrix was... he was one helluva player, youtube simply doesn't have much of his stuff available but this guy could THROW IT DOWN...
yes it's all about genre your right.. to each his own but you can write, play and sing and do it at a level that no one has ever achieved before or since, all at the same time, you might be above the rest also you are free to start your own thread of your fav or best of the best. just so happens all american music came from the blues.
Your right there, clapton tried to duplicate robert johnsons tunes on cd and failed, this guy had some scary long fingers, always makes me think of the movie ''oh brother were are thou'' and crossroads with steve via and rye cooder playing the guitar It all comes from the blues.
all 3 of these guys have there roots in blues artists from teh 50-60's... SRV was notable for ripping out Albert King riffs and Hendrix, believe it or not, was notable was evolving motown style rhythm playing from guys like Ike Turner (a phenomenal player in his own right even if he was an abusive SOB to his wife)...
I got deep into the old blues back a few years ago. There are some things there that people still have not tapped. The 3 players I mentioned above tapped into it and ran with it. Only one is still around, and he still taps into it, just not like he used to. Some people think Blues is just a genre. It is not. It is a spirit. A life of it's own. A "MoJo" if you will. When you get into it as deep as you can, you will find out things about yourself, and those from the past, that you never knew.
