After our trip to our family farm in Bama last week my father and I decided to start planting our plots again. We have three plots each one close to an acre. What do you turkey hunters recommend planting that would help hold birds on the property and possibly still be providing food during March/April?
They love about anything. Cereal grains are great, millets, clovers...turkeys aren't generally too picky. I have about fifty every day on each of two wheat fields now. The mix that Tacklebox was talking about the other day from a QDMA biologist would work great. It was crimson clover, arrowleaf clover and beardless wheat I believe. Plant it all, let it mature and go to seed, mow it in August and it reseeds itself and renews from august on through spring. Pretty elegant design.
My father was was looking into that. Sounds like good stuff, right now I think that will go in one plot and we will try some other things in the other two.
Good luck with the chufa, I've tried it three times and have never gotten it to grow. Of all the things I've grown in my life, that is the one thing I've tried that just flipped me the bird, lol.
What do you think the problem was? My grandfather said he had used it before and did ok. Said it was a lot of work though.
I always blamed it on bad seed, I seemed to have good conditions to plant it and it planted okay. I have no idea otherwise. I may give it another go at some point but I was pretty disgusted with it after the second time, the third time I was like screw it, lol.
