Tonight I'm sitting on the ground next to a tree and in some tall grass with a great shooting lane right to my front. I heard footsteps behind me around 4:30ish but I didn't know what it was and it got real quiet. At 6:05 I hear movement from the same direction coming towards me to my right. I slowly turn my head to the right and there is a little 4 point buck about 10 yards away. My heart is pounding like crazy, but I can't draw on him because I'm right handed and he is on my right side! I had to watch him turn and walk 15 yards away. I finally stand to draw and he just takes off running. He didn't see me he was on the edge of an open field and was blasting his way across the open area. Now I have shot deer with a rifle but never with a bow. I have had a bow for about 15-20 years but never felt confident hunting, and no places to hunt. My God what an adrenaline rush, I swear just sitting here thinking about it is making my heart pound again. Now I know why people bowhunt! I know this isn't a big thing for most of you guys but for me it was huge.
I was a Corpsman with the Marines and I did some stuff that was pretty exciting (fast roping, repelling, spy rigging) but this was even better!
Good luck, it is tough from the ground, I got lucky my first year hunting with a bow and took my very first deer from the ground on public land. Since then I have hunted from a tree, quite a bit easier.
Gotta agree with this, having it happen on the groud is way more exciting. For me its totally different that being in a tree. Good luck the rest of the year.
Shot a doe same way friday night. Bad thing was i wasnt able to find her the next day. Dark red spotty blood. Sounded like a pass threw but no arrow in cut bean feild? Blood was on ground immediately after shot. Trail lasted 90 yards going to standing corn. Couldnt find any blood rubs in corn field. A f*****. Mystery. I shot alot of deer in the past and it was a pass thre sound.
Bowhunting is more addictive than alcohol, drugs & porn combined! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
I don't care if I'm in a tree, or on the ground, when I start getting ready to draw my bow on a buck or a doe, it's heart pounding, nerve flaring "live action!!". Awesome, thanks for the share.
That's what it's all about. you'll never forget that moment. ever. And thank you for your service! We owe guys and girls like you a lot.
