Just want to hear what you think is the most effective call for deer archery opener (SoCal is Sept 1st).
I don't use a call til pre-rut, If I was desperate to kill a doe I would go with a fawn bleat. I just rather not let the mature deer no the season has opened yet.
I also am a silent hunter until the rut is in full go! I will tinker with the can on pre-rut every now and then but rut is my time to call.
Calls probably won't do much for bucks until the pre-rut. If you want to try it, you could do a fawn distress call....sometimes it will really bring in the does.
The only time I grunt before rut is just after I get in my stand I will do a couple soft grunts to make other deer think it was a buck walking in.
Silence, all season long for me. Only call unless I have eyes on a buck to gauge his mood and can tell he wont be in range otherwise.
