If this thread doesnt belong here i apologize, i couldnt find an area related to this...

Im looking to buy a new computer, and since im filming my hunts, the need for a computer that can handle video editing is now a priority. Can anyone make any suggestions from their personal experience as to which ones are ideal for such use?

Im not lookin to break the bank, just looking for something reasonably affordable that can efficiently handle video editing.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm not going to recommend any specific brand or model. It just needs to have a fast processor, I would recommend an Intel I7 Quad core processor. You could get by with an I5. You need lots of memory, I'd recommend no less than a total of 32GB. I would suggest it having a fairly large SSD hard drive, maybe 120gb or larger to install your operating system and video editing software on. Then, you will need at least two 1TB hard drive to start. Save your data to both, that way if one fails, you have a backup.

I built mine from scratch to meet these specs, and It works great.

I desire this update before any kind of better camera equipment honestly...how much did your set up run you just tower wise (excluding monitors and such). You build it through someone or you personally?

Somewhere in the area of $1000.00 Got some good deals on black Friday and Cyber Monday. I could have done it cheaper and still had a decent system, but I bought all high end stuff. I built it personally, with the help of my brother. He's way more techy than I am. It was a fun project for the two of us. Only took a couple hours to put it together, then some time to load up the software.

I also forgot, make sure it has a very good graphics card in it. That's another crucial part of the system.

I was thinking or "hoping" to stay around the $750 mark....if patient and not in a hurry I wonder how close I can get to the system described...as you listed pretty much what I came up with spec wise discussing with my friend in the computer industry.

I was gonna update my cameras...which is HIGHLY needed...but I decided what is the point of great visual video if I can't do more int he editing department...besides I enjoy editing videos way too much. While on the editing topic what software do you use Sky? I am getting ready to buy one and I've heard great things about Adobe Elements but all my editing friends say the new Cyberlink Powerdirector 12 software does what Adobe does and more and can be had much cheaper.

I built my system in December of '12, so I would think you could probably get these specs in the price range you are looking for. There's always newer, faster, more powerful stuff coming out in the computer world, so prices tend to drop off fairly quickly for "outdated" hardware :)

I'm using PowerDirector 11. It works fine, but I'll be honest with you. I just can't seem to find the time to edit my videos much. I have lots of footage that I have not done anything with. I really need to dedicate more time to this so I can get good at it. I haven't even scratched the service of what you can do with this program. I have been thinking about taking an editing call at the local college to help give me a bit of a jump start.

I was looking at the iMac all in ones. It has the i9 processor, 1TB SSD HD, 8GB RAM, plus i have an external 1TB HD as well. As far as RAM i will most likely upgrade that and the video card as well.

I upgraded my camera to a JVC gyhm100u, so im excited to see the difference between the Sony HandiCam HD i used this year.

Ha, I thought you said you were not looking to break the bank :) Yeah, that should do pretty well. I'm not really familiar with the Apple platform, but I would say you really need more than 8GB of ram. By looking at the web site, looks like you can get it with up to 32GB installed, or add more yourself. I think the Nvidia GeForce 700 should be fine for you. I belive that is similar to the one I have. I will have to check and see what I have when I get home.

yeah my wife is pretty techy, just not with film editing needs, and i was gonna try to go over 8GB. Luckily, Apple provides a small discount for military, so it will help SOME with the cost haha. Didnt want to spend that much, but the more i read into it, the more their product comes up, so if the quality is as good as they say, i reckon its worth forkin over the cash.

Found a guy to custom build a model...this is what he reccomended:

    Mid-tower case
    Gigabyte Motherboard AM3+ Socket
    32gb DDR3 Memory
    AMD FX-8320 8 core 4Ghz Processor
    1TB Sata HDD850w Power Supply

I'm not so sure about that set up. The graphics card would not be good enough. I would also put in a blue ray burner. DVD's are ok, but not up to HD quality. Plus, they are really cheap these days. Give me a little time and I will see if I can put together something for you that should do the trick and still not cost a fortune.

You'd be making the right decision by choosing a computer that rhymes with Apple.

I hate to sound like a moron or apple slappy, I work with computers, etc. for a living. I mainly work on laptops. I was replacing laptops for me and my employees nearly every year. It was ridiculous. The constantly crashed, etc.

I was out of town on a business trip when I couldn't take it anymore. I bought a MacBook Pro and ended all of the nonsense. That was 2011. Since 2011, I've had the same computer doing the same stuff I did on the PC. It's never crashed.

Long story short. Spend the extra money and get a Mac.

Like it has already been said, buy Mac. It will be the best choice you will ever make. I currently use mine in school and to store and edit all my hunting videos that I shoot on my GoPro. Still have plenty of room and this computer has never slowed down or crashed on me.

One other thing on the subject. If you want to do it the right way, you'll need software. The standard for video editing is Final Cut Pro, guess who makes it? If you wanted to do it on a smaller scale (but still very very good), you could also use iMovie (comes with Mac)

If you're in the video editing, movie making business, you're using one of 2 programs. Final Cut Pro ($299.) or Avid MediaComposer ($999.) Final Cut Pro is easy to use, Avid Media Composer is out of the question unless you're a professional, and if you were, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

So, remember the amount of money you're about to spend on a PC, doesn't include the software, but with a Mac, you have at least iMovie (which is still very good)

Unless it's your main job though there are tons of good affordable softwares out there for editing. Cyberlink Powerdirector is a great one, adobe elements and others are good as well. I got to tinker with Final Cut one time and absolutely fell in love...but would never drop that kind of change for a non-main job.

Yep like most people custom built is the way to go...there are plenty of people and companies that do this..this is a good way to save money instead of buying brand name computers
