There really isn't one. You best bet right now is finding acorns. Although your could try them, most calls aren't likely to work right now. Some very like rattling, or doe bleats might draw some attention, but I wouldn't bother just yet. Maybe another week or so, 2 would e better.
i would say can call by primos that works well for does and fawns and even works for young bucks but dont expect to call in a big buck with this.
What this bro said. Also if you see a buck going away from you you could try a little grunting, just not to the point that you accelerate his departure. You just never know what they'll respond to
I think it's too soon as mentioned, but the last 2 weeks of Oct and first of week of Nov should be good. Personally, I never rattle because the buck to doe ratio in my region is so out of whack that there's no need for bucks to fight for does. All the rattling does is spook deer. I'll use the Can if I see a buck and he's going away from me. I have had several bucks respond to it! I'll also use my grunt tube in the same situation.
Social Grunt calls, contact bleats, after 30 seasons and 30 years calling deer, I've called bucks in from the first day to the last day of the PA season... deer are vocal year around, not just during hunting season...and there are many calls on the market making acceptable sounds. Lures, not a big fan although I've had minimal success using curiosity scents, I prefer to go as scentless as possible, not using scents or lures and definitely contact or social grunts and bleats.
I heard grunts all over the place this past weekend even had a 4 pt come into me. Saturday evening I heard a deep grunt off in the distance so I let one off to about an hour and a half later at sundown I was looking at a 140 class buck but had no lane or light. I think the key is to not over do it this time of year. I'll only grunt if I hear another buck or I have one traveling out of range. But then again what the hell do I know?
I wouldn't use any scents this early. I would stay away from calling unless you do a bleat or something. I had a shooter buck come within 60 yards 2 nights ago and he turned away, I knew it's too early to do anything really but I decided to spark his curiousity with the mout made bleating noise we use to get them to stop, he turned back towards me and decided to see what it was. He didn't get close enough for a shot but I did learn a new way to use this noise. lol
You can only speak for yourself its not early everywhere , the rut will be different in North Carolina than Kansas
