Fred Bear makes some awesome Bows in that price range, I just picked up a brand new 2009 bear lights out for a friend for $200 and I know where another one is at a local shop used for $200 and it's one step up from the lights out I believe... Hate to promote other sites, but look on archerytalk... they have some awesome deals... one guy is selling brand new Hoyt Kobalts for $275 TYD

And most any arrow is good for hunting... I would recommend the Gold Tip Expedition Hunters.... GREAT arrows for the money.

Bear has good compound bow packages that include everything you'd need on your bow. As for arrows you would have to find the right spine for your set up. Bow brands usually have charts to tell you what arrows you'll need.

    Mathews Mission Line
    Bear Mauhler
    Diamond Outlaw
    PSE Brute or stinger

If you look hard you can find Mathews DXTs for right around $500 loaded. That would be the route I'd take.

If you don't mind going a little higher, I'll add the Bowtech Assassin to that list. Got mine for $600 and love it.

Mission bows are awesome, but if it was my $500 I'd buy a year or two old Mathews or Hoyt. The brand name helps hold that value, better than the "newness" of a lesser name.

Hit up your local bow shop. There are people out there who get new bows every couple years and you might be able to find a good deal on a trade in

Archery talk, ebay or craigs list. For 300-500 you can find just about any high end bow out there, maybe 1 or 2 years ol but who cares! I bought a fully loaded Elite z28 with hard case and a doz Easton axxis arrows for $500 shipped to my house!

    Good luck!

Everytime my opinion of you starts to go up you have to go and ruin it with comments like that! If it wasn't for the dawg bites I don't think I would like ya at all!! LOL

Don't listen to Dawg he doesn't know what he is talking about. Not gonna tell you to go out and buy a Hoyt because they are the best. Go out and buy the best bow you can get for the money that feels good to you. However Hoyt's are the best! :)

I'm going to agree with the person who said craigslist/archerytalk. I wouldn't buy new if my budget was that low, you can get higher end bows a couple years old for that price range. I'd make sure to take whatever bow you buy, if you buy used, to a proshop before shooting it.

I just picked up a 2010 PSE Bow Madness. I was frustrated with the size of my Bear. The PSE is quit, compact, very fast, and easy to shoot, once you get use to the smaller bow. I love it. Let-off, draw length, and weight can be adjusted without a bow press. I bought the package used from a local pro shop for $450. It had maybe 25 arrows shot before the previous owner sold it to me. I shot several bows while looking to buy a new one. Including the z7. This was perfect for me. I hunt real tight stands and ground blinds and the Bow Madness is perfect. The specs are pretty much identical to the z7, but at a much better price. Good Luck

take a look at as many bows as you can.
try to shoot as many of them that you can.
It's really depends on you, your draw length how much you can pull, are you young and still growing etc etc...
arrows are going to be the least of your worries to start out. You need to buy arrows that are correct for the bow you are shooting. Brand of arrow only matters once you know what you want and need.
I would look into the mission line and bear if your are still growing hoyt makes a bow called a ruckes that is adjustable also and fits your price point but it is a youth bow.
they also have a rampage that runs inthe neighborhood of $500 but then you still need all of your accessories
