i know there is one or two of you on here that are/ or know quite a bit about falconry. i really really want to learn this process. i realize it is a very long process to learn, and it takes years upon years in order to be skilled at it. but if i never start i will never achieve the final goal. i am in college now so i plan to just start with the researching/test taking in the next few years. then after college ill begin the rest of the process. here is my question to those of you that know something about falconry, where do i start? what do i read? what test do i take etc etc etc im in missouri if that matters at this stage of the game
you have to go through an apprenticeship. http://www.missourifalconersassociation.org/index.html that would probably be a good place to start your quest
I saw a special on HBO the other day about it. They said in the USA you have to capture your bird in the wild. Then you have to spend 2 years under a Master Falconer before you are licensed. Sounds like a hobby for someone with a lot of time on their hands and a big supply of ready cash.
yeha you have to catch and release your first birds. most falconers I know are not wealthy, but do dedicate a heathly amount of time to it I have posted my friend bobs link a few times, He is right outside of Valentine montana, completely off thepower grid, and raises falcons for a living. last time i was there i was playing fetch with Bugs, his big male gyre falcon, with a tennis ball, some of the coolest stuff ever man. www.hollisterlongwings.com
the time i can devote, but it will have to be in a few years. right now i just want to start with, reading, and possibly the test taking that must be done. and slowly work into capturing my own bird. i know its going to be a very long process but i have to start sometime.
