It only truly matters if the ladies like the smell. And the oils do take a few days to soften it up.

Man, don't know if that new oil doesn't agree with me or what but this is pretty uncomfortable right now, like a thousand needles running across my face when I touch it. I went back with the vitamin E I was using just to try to get it to calm down. Dang I hope I don't have to cut this off now after it was going so well but I don't know how long I can stand this, can't even go to sleep. Seemed to have gotten worse after using the new oil instead of better. I can see under all the whiskers that my skin is red and irritated. Going to try to tuff this out and hope for the best.

See what happens when you put crap in your beard?

Take a shower, wash beard with shampoo to get the oil out, pat dry.

Tomorrow or the next day when you shower, use the shampoo. After your face is back to normal, you could "condition" your beard with hair conditioner. Do this once maybe twice a week for a month. Keep an eye out for acne. Some guys will break out from anything their face is not used to.

Keep the beard in summer.......it will actually keep your face cool. (I used to work in a foundry.)

Ha, yeah. I washed and conditioned it yesterday and didn't put anything in it all day yesterday until the new oil arrived. I don't know if the problem was due to not having oil in it all day or if I had a reaction to something in the new oil. Early this morning when I posted about the problem, I actually just used my aftershave (it's glycol based with moisturizer) and then used the vitamin E on it. When I woke up this morning it was okay. So I'm not exactly sure what the problem was but it was pretty painful, like severe razor burn is the only way I can think to describe it.

Yes, acne is the reason I generally have given up on trying to grow it out. My face is generally clean and acne free until I get the irritation from whiskers. So far though I've not had any problems with that to speak of, hopefully I don't either. It's getting long enough now that I can brush it and it acts about like hair rather than stiff whiskers. I brushed it this morning thinking maybe part of the irritation was just from it being curly and thick under my chin and upper lip.

i let my grow for about 10months before shaving it for an interview. I used Brown Bag Beard Care...he makes scented oils that work for hunters, including fresh dirt, pines, and unscented...hes definitely worth a look, great prices too. This pic was about a month or so before i had to shave it..

That's impressive. I'll look into the mentioned products, do they have a website? I'll search it.

I've never had that problem but do know alot of oil I get a ya to try it first on bare skin to see if any irritation happens. It may have just been a ingredient used in the oil. Maybe your just too soft for a beard lol. Hopefully you figure it out though. Either way would help out to have something that kind of conditions the hair and skin underneath. Might try a balm instead of oil if it keeps irritating. I've seen those that are scented too the same as oils.

Might haveta keep quiet now though seeing as Stick 'em bought the big guns outs ha.

Too soft for a beard. Unfortunately you probably hit the nail square on the head, lol.
I think it was an ingredient in one of the oils, I sampled them all, could be any one of them or the mix of them. I've not had any further problems today so far.

Haha I was against oils and what not the whole way thru...then I broke down and tried the company I mentioned and changed my mind, haha. Had that awesome cover scent dirt smell and actually did make the beard less coarse and softer.

I duno what guns your talking ab, I'm just a little guy lol

I haven't read through the whole thread but if you guys are interested in trying some oils out my cousin recently started making his own and is selling locally at shows but will ship. Everything is all natural. Im using the mustache wax now since I can't have a beard due to my job. If you have any questions I might be able to help you out but your best bet is to message him.

Haha had to have a little fun.

I read an article while back talking bout what to look for and avoid as far as what the oil is made of but don't remember all of it. Haveta see if can stumble across it again. May just be one of those things though.

I'm not usually very sensitive to chemicals and stuff so not sure what caused it but my face has always been a weak link which is why I never let my beard grow. I'll try these oils out one at a time from now on and see if I can pinpoint that problem. It could just be that I went all day without using anything and got a little irritation from not using any oil as I had been using quite a lot of vitamin E on it with pretty good results. I washed it out when I showered and maybe just dried it out too much over the day. One of the oils is a pine scent and I suspect it may have been the culprit because I think I used it last, it smelled good too..ugh.

I appreciate the help guys, really...it's a fun thread. Thanks.:tu:

Hey bro....I have to warn you.... Beards are addicting....once you let it grow long, you will find a reason or excuse to shave it....you will regret it and grow it back.,,,you may never shave again after that!

I'm seeing that more all the time now. I was pretty self conscious about it when I decided to try letting it grow again this time around but now that it's getting a bit more comfortable and I'm getting used to the idea of it...I admit I'm pretty thrilled with it.

Maybe it's just because it's something new or a drastic change in the mirror, idk but I'm getting to where I'm kind of proud to see it as it progresses and I like fiddling with it. Where I kind of always felt having to shave the whiskers to keep my face from being uncomfortable was a total and constant point of dread an irritation, now I'm kinda looking at it like I'm kind of proud I can grow it. Kinda silly, it's just a beard, lol. My dad got a close look at it today and I told him I was growing it on purpose. I expected to get that look like I was being stupid but instead he started kidding around with me about it and instead I got a feeling that he was a little bit proud of it for me. Maybe I was just relieved he didn't outright tell me I was an idiot, lol.

When I very first started growing mine out it didn't really fill in until about a month or two and every time I'd go visit my grandparents my grandma asked me if I was goin for a white trash look. She rarely holds back anything but it's usually in good fun so I'd just laugh.

I have a beard all year round but let it get real wild from the start of bow season through the end of ice fishing. I found that shampoo and conditioner actual strips your beard of natural oils. I never wash mine with soap and it is soft, smooth and my skin is never irritated. Why take out the natural oil then add some other kind of oil? Sounds like a racket to me :). I tried some a while back. Not a big fan. The only reason I would use it is because of the fact that it smells good.
