I use to live in NH... never saw a bear (but I missed a moose with my car by 5').
Nice photo... guess he was sniffin' around to see whatcha' were doing there.
Hopefully we'll see your photo with him on the ground during season. Best of Luck!

Black bears are all over northern California like flies too.

I have never tasted bear meat but I have heard it is greasy.

    So I don't hunt them.

I prefer lean meat (venison) instead.

I have gotten up in the morning and seen all sorts of fresh bear tracks in my camp.

Fortunately they have not bothered me inside my tent.

Thats why I sleep with a 44 Smith & Wesson under my pillow. For a bear I would fire a warning shot first. They don't like loud noises.

No bears allowed in the tent.

There are bear-proof cannisters you must have to put your trail food and toothpaste into, and keep this away from your tent, so as not to attract bears.

And you need to change clothes before you turn in for sleep, so that the camp odors are not on your clothes, such as wiping your hands on your trousers after you eat salami, etc.

If you decide to go after this bruin, and you get him/her, then let me know how the meat tastes. Thanks.
