Hey guys.... I went out today and checked my game cam again.... 980 photos in 2 days.... so much for over-checking my camera... kinda helps when deer are in constant contact with humans on a daily basis.

I was suprised to find that Thursday evening I got more photos of a notorious black bear that destroyed several of my bird-feeders on Wed night. I ended up getting 63 photos of him and I think he is a little bigger than what I originally thought. I originally guessed that the bear would go 200-215 lbs live weight.... but I am thinking he is a good bit more now. I would like to hear everybodies estimates on live weight... especially Schultzy... This bear looks like it has a pretty big head on it and I'm thinking that if I continue to get photos this fall, I may get my bear tag and try for him this year.

Here is the first/only photo that I got of him on Thursday...

And here are the new photos

Thanks guys... its cool, except the old road/path in to check my camera is surrounded on both sides by thick brush... you can't see more than a few feet in front of you, and it leads to an opening that is full of berry bushes....

I already had one encounter with this bear earlier this year at about 10 feet when I woke him up while walking through some x-mas trees and he stood up on his backlegs and looked at me before running off.

    Jason,

Bears are undoubtedly the hardest animal to judge, especially without a reference next to them.

With that said, this bear looks to be maybe 150-175# max. It has a narrow head, big close ears and smaller shoulders. My guess is its a younger sow or a real young boar.

Either way, if you've never shot a bear, it would be a kill to be proud of.

Great photographs! I don't know that your weight estimates are that far off.Maybe 250 lbs.

I agree with Dan. Actually I was thinking 200#. He's actually a thin bear. Almost oddly thin but like Dan said, he's young and I'm thinking 2 year old boar. He's "gangly".

Here's a bear I caught on video this past season. I estimate him around 300, 325ish.

    Bear Video:

    See the difference.

I have killed a few black bears. My estimation on live weight would be somewhere around 175 lbs. His ears look big, long nose, and belly doesn't hang down much. He's a decent bear but still immature looking IMO. That said…bears are REALLY tough to judge size on so I could be totally wrong.;)

    Here's something fun.

Use your side bar and at the pictures scroll down real fast.

It looks like the bear gets up and comes at you like a movie. LOL :D

    Thanks guys.

I have no clue when it comes to field judging a bear... I was basing my guess off of a bear that the Game Commission trapped in my yard a few years ago. It was a sow with three cubs and when they trapped her (she was in the trapped about 45 minutes after they dropped it off) they guessed her to be in the 200-225 lb range. Here is a photo of her and her three cubs... the light in the background is my buddy and I about 65 yards away with a portable spotlight.

I was going to post what Dan said. That bear is well under 200lbs. With that said, if I got a poke at him, I'd definitely shoot him. A bear in PA is an awesome trophy.

I'm in the heart of bear season up here and we've killed 7 in the last two weeks......I keep going back and looking at these pics and am having a hard time even putting 150# on him.

BUT, like Matt and I said, no matter the size it would make an excellent trophy for a first bear.....especially in PA.

Thanks for the info Dan... I appreciate it. I would be more than happy with that bear.... I guess I will have to wait and see if he is still in the area towards bear season.

On a side note.. I need to get some photos of a bear from my buddies family farm a few years ago. My buddies uncle got a call in the morning from his brother and he told him that one of his cows (black angus) got loose and was out back of his house... he went outside and it was a giant bear... the things back was almost up to the top of a high tensile fence that the cows were kept it.... it was a bruiser..... also, my old UPS delivery man shot a freak of a bear a few years ago... I can't remember exactly what it weighed but I believe it was in the top 5 shot that year in PA... over 600 pounds... he is a member of RealTree and goes by Strut10

I would be too. I've always wanted a bear. The spots I hunt in the Adirondacks have some really good bear populations, our early bear season actually opens in 20 days. I'll shoot the first non-cub I see if I'm lucky enough. I really want a rug....;)
