Hello all, I recently talked to my girlfriends grandfather who offered to give me one of his old 1980's Grizzly's, its a 50lb bow. He said it was painted up from being hunted with back in the day, and he said all i would have to do is maybe clean it off, refinish it and put a new string on it. From some recent research these bows look really nice, and i would love to clean this thing up when i get it and make it look just like new, and i will be putting a new Flemish string on it as well. Any tips on things to do with this bow to make it shoot nice and quiet and to refinish it? Completely new to trad so im really looking forward to this project and getting to shoot a bow that has countless stories and memories along with it. Thank you in advance! -Nick

I re did a Grizzly about 5 years ago as a suprise for my father inlaw. He had loaned it out about 30 years earlier and never seen it again. I was able to get it back and re finish it and gave it to him for christmas. I dont know about paint removal though. His was in rough shape. I re stained it in the wore places, ran fine steel wool all over it, cleaned it with lacquor thinner and re cleared it with laquor. Had a new string made also. I had the original arrows he gave me years ago as he had no Bow to use them with. I gave him back the arrows also. The finish looks streaky but we had brought it in from the cold and it was condensing.

Wow thats a great looking bow!! He said it was just some spray paint, so im assuming some denatured alcohol or something of the sort would take it off without damaging the wood. So i could pick up some laquer thinner and normal ole laquer from a hardware store and recoat it with that if needed? Thanks for sharing, cant wait to get to look at this bow!
