I was invited by a business associate to come and hunt his property this past weekend. It is a little different country than my home turf but not much. It is primarily ranch land with a few wheat fields scattered about which serves as the preferred food and makes travel routes fairly predictable based on terrrain features. I set up on an inside corner about 50 yards off the edge of a wheat field and this guy shows up in the last few minutes of legal shooting light. I hurried the shot (punched the release causing me to jerk) and hit a little further back than what I was aiming for. I didn't get a "pass through" so I didn't have an arrow to inspect (was using the Rage, surprise, surprise). I erred on the side of caution and decided to wait until the next morning. I picked up the blood trail about 30 yards from POI, found the arrow about 50 yards from POI and was pleased to see it all red and no brown/green stuff. About another 50 yards and I found my deer, shot a little further back than ideal, but stayed in the boiler room.
nice buck, congrats ? why do you say surprise surprise to the rage? are you saying that it wasn't a pass thru because of the broadhead? i would think it was due to shot placement, but i'm new to using the rage broadheads (3 blade). i didn't get a pass thru but it was due to the angle of my shot, even with that it made a huge hole and alot of blood for one hole and he only went 50 yards. just curious
Thanks for the responses. I have never shot the three blade but I have used the two blade on numerous deer. It is currently my preferred BH because of the blood trail it leaves due to the massive hole it creates. However, as the old saying goes " There are no free lunches" and the trade off is by trying to push such a large diameter BH through, you are going to get less penetration over the long haul as compared to a smaller BH. Do I get complete pass thru's with the Rage? Absolutely, but not as the same rate as I did with a smaller diameter BH. I am okay with the trade off and accept it as part of the process capability (or lack of) this BH.
