Hey everyone the temps in new york are finally starting to drop for us this season, and as it gets colder i need to know, what are some of your opinions on good cold weather base layers/thermals? Whats the warmest? Which company has the most comfortable? Let me know as im suffering out here and need a new base layer! Sent from my SM-G930V using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Absolutely nothing like merino wool. I've got some minus 33 expedition weight that is super warm. Blessings..........Pastorjim
I like Cabelas ECWCS Polar Weight baselayers (1/4 zip pullover top). I usually wear a really lightweight baselayer under them since the ECWCS doesn't fit as close to your skin as I'd like. Had them for 3+ years and haven't been cold yet down into the negatives. http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/browse.cmd?N=1100905 A lot of it has to do with your outerlayer and layering in general. If your socks are too tight or if you have a hat that isn't very warm, you're going to be cold no matter what. Just because you buy the nicest, heaviest weight baselayers, it doesn't automatically mean you're going to be warm. What other gear will you be wearing?
Can you ship some of that cold down here. Will be in the 80's for the next week here. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I second Cabela's ecsw polar weight base layers. Bought top and bottom last year and they are incredibly comfortable and warm
First lite base layers for me. Elite 35 80# Easton FMJ's CBE Tek Hybrid Pro Dead Ringer Freak Extreme
I’ve been on Patagonia Capilene for years and see nothing any warmer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I am from Vermont, I feel your pain, believe me! I've tried many a base layer and the best I have found is Sitka Gear's heavy base layers. I like wool for certain circumstances, but I tend to hunt mostly public land (long walks to the stand etc.) and sweat easily. Wool just takes forever to dry out and I'm left somewhat soggy in the stand...warm, but soggy. The Sitka line is warm, comfortable, well thought out and the 1/4 zipper up front is awesome. I walk to my stand zip open and layers off, get in, and 15 minutes later I'm dry and warm. Zip up, layers on and I'm ready! Keep me warm throughout the late season and this stuff will last you years! Its pricey, I know...but worth every penny.
I've been a huge fan of merino wool for a long time now. I personally haven't used anything better for a base layer. The trick is making sure you get a high quality merino wool garment. A lot of companies label their garments as merino wool when they only contain 10-20% wool. Minus 33 has some good stuff, as do Icebreaker and First Lite as well.
I go with the Military Grade Fleece from Terramar https://www.terramarsports.com/collections/warm-layers/products/w8369
As the years go by getting cold is a lot easier. Last year I got by with 50/50 blend T shirt, Cotton briefs, cotton long johns, light flannel lined jeans, standard camo pants, thermal long sleeved shirt, cotton shirt and thick loose fitting hooded camo jacket. Yesterday I was out in a NE wind, no long johns and no hooded jacket and was not comfortable near the end. Going to have to make some changes so glad this was brought up. Not seeing deer on the cam during morning hunting times so will go out in the afternoon and sit.
