What do you guys think about baiting?...My opion i think it should be legal. I live in a cwd area so baiting is not allowed. I was thinkin why can't they find a cure to cwd yet and come out with a baiting block with medicine in it so you could bait the deer and has medicine in it to cure them i think that would be an idea what are your guys thoughts on this
i live in michigan where the ban was currently lifted. i have mixed thought on whether or not im going to bait. it may help me to shoot more deer, but then again the best part of hunting in my neck of the woods is the challenge. if i shoot a deer in its most natural state with my bow then thats what really makes me happy. ill just have to decide come near hunting season.
No thanks, hunting should be just that. Hunting! Out smarting an animal in its own enviornment is what all the hard work and preparation is all about. Baiting to me is nothing more than shooting, anyone can do that. There is no strategy to baiting at all.
ya i agree in away but if i want to get some good pics on trail cam to find out what deer are in an area how do i do that
I live in NC and it is legal to bait. Do I bait, Yes, I do. The biggest thing I use for bait is mineral stations. I do not just randomly put them anywhere in the woods either. There is a strategy and you have to track and locate just as if you would if you do not bait. They are useless unless placed just off of a deer trail no more than 30 feet. I mostly bait so that I can confirm the location of the deer and if I had cameras I would use them for pictures also. Last season was my first and I did bait with corn a few times but, neither deer I took was over a corn pile. If I do this year I will still not hunt over them. I will however along a trail so that maybe they will be more likely to use one trail over the other.
I will never hunt anything other than natural bait (farmer's crops, acorns, etc.). I do, however, think things like baiting are part of the personal belief systems that we've developed over time and I don't judge anyone who does. Baiting, to me, is the artificial act of creating a food source in the effort to improve your chances of killing. I don't just include mineral licks or bait stations that drop corn in this vein, I think growing crops for the express purpose of coercing more deer is the same thing. I know that these bait stations and crops take time, effort and money, but I feel more satisfied knowing that I used the existing structures on the land to guide me. I understand that stalking black bears can be difficult but killing them over bait is one of the few things that I just can't get my brain wrapped around.
I agree mostly in playing by the rules. You cannot bait in Indiana, therefore do not. I do however put out feeders and mineral blocks. However, just like the rules state, they come out at a certain time and I make sure everything is cleaned up. However, would big bucks even come to a bait site, during sunlight hours? It seems to me a bunch of non natural food in an open location is a big red flag for pressure. That is one thing I struggle with the though of when I put my feeders out, am I sending a signal to the bucks that someone is here and watching? As far as whether I agree with it or not, well I don't think it's very sporting, however, most of us are real outdoorsman, and maintaining an environment and ecology is important, and if the state of Michigan (or that of which you live) determines they need baiting sites, then I do not see a problem with it. It can still be very much a game of cat and mouse.
I really don't care if people bait or not (where legal). Like mentioned, it is currently allowed again in Michigan. At least the whining will stop from those in favor of baiting. I shot deer over bait as a kid, have not hunted over bait in many years, and have no idea if I will again someday. Its not a bad tactic to have in the late season in some areas. Michigan has high deer densities in some counties that they have wanted reduced for years. Eliminating baiting (probably the easiest way to kill a deer, didn't make much sense. Especially once it was established that CWD was not an immediate threat. Again, I don't care either way.
I have a couple places to hunt and dont bait any except my grandpa's place. I only hunt there a couple times a year but I go over there and put some corn down for him. He's 87 and hunts a very small area so I need to bring the deer over to him.
I guess why i posted this was i live in a cwd zone i was just thinking why don't they come out with some kind of medicine where they could put it in a block or something to cure cwd rather than shooting all the deer just to eliminate them
Because there is no cure for it. The human form of it is Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. It's not a simple disease to fix.
Bingo it almost always takes decades of research to cure diseases, especially now that the "easy" ones have been taken care of, lol.
I apologize in advance if I'm wrong, but are you the same guy who wrote a blog about small food plots?
To each their own. I have my own hunting style and baiting is not one of my tactics, but I do not see anything wrong with it. *edit* I do bait trail camera locations in the summer time with minerals and at times corn.
it almost has been a decade already since cwd was an issue...i know its probably is a challenge of curing it or else im sure it would already be a cure out at least i hope so....But i thought i heard they made some progress on having a cure for cwd not sure where i heard but i heard it somewhere
If it is legal I say go for it. I have hunted over bait late season and have shot deer over bait. It takes a pretty good area to get them to come during hunting hours. I see no harm and won't argue either way. We have enough of a battle with the anti-hunters no need fighting among ourselves.
Like Vito said I don't care one way or another, I have done it when I was young but don't anymore. The biggest problem I see with baiting here in Michigan is that so many guys put out way more than is legal and the deer seem to go nocturnal. When michigan banned it the last three years we were really starting to see deer move more on patterns all day long.. If you want to do it and it is legal go for it..
That was me, not Grant. The "honey-hole" food plot I have is at my northern MN family cabin; which is a small clover plot. As a video team we spend nearly all our hunting time in SE Minnesota (no Bait) and Pepin County Wisconsin (baiting is allowed). IMO in Wisconsin there is enough natural food & farmland to hunt around; we simply choose not to use a bait pile during hunting season. I think many users have made good points as to the fine line of what constitutes baiting and what does not. A well manicured turnip plot, beans left standing to January, lush green clover plot, and a 2 gallons of corn are pretty similar in my book. For me its #1 always follow the states game laws, and the rest is up to the hunter. Some of these types of discussions could be said about trail cameras, compound bows, rangefinders, etc... This sport that we all love is balancing act of having a challenge but also using our own skills, techniques and technologies. I say to each there own.
