Just about to finish the glue up on the riser block. There has been a change in the riser so pics to follow.
Now seeing Dave is a big military fan and sepcially of the special forces and their "black ops" operations I have come up with what very well could be the very first "Stealth" riser, I am sure that once other bowyers see this riser it will be the industry standard. Let me tell you that it was no mean feat to get all the materials needed for the risers Stealth capabilities, I had to call in just about every favour that was owed to me over the years. So without further ado or fan fare here is the worlds first "STEALTH" riser.
hahahahahahahaha LMAO , Russ you are the man . , its just what i was looking for mate ..... very stealth
Guy's believe it or not thats the black cloth the riser is laying on. If it was not for the "G" clamps I would have never found it in the heat box:d
Ok well enough of the funnin Here is the revised riser rough cut to shape. It is Osage,Cocobolo,Osage,Cocobolo,Osage. When I do the final shaping the Cocobolo will be visible in the grip section. With it rough cut it's now time to sand to the line so it's over to the belt sander. Once it is sanded to the lines I put it through the Jointer to make sure everything is square where the limbs will be attached. So we are now at this stage all ready for drilling the limb bolt and alingment pin holes. Seeing the hardware and that has not arrived yet I will drill the holes tomorrow. Oh I will also start the tapering process of the lams, they arrived back from Kent this afternoon.
That is definately the better option mate , the Osage and Cocobola both look great together . Really starting to take shape , cannot wait to se the limbs
Ok time to drill the holes for the locking hardware. First off very carefully measure twice and mark the center of the riser. Then attach the drilling jig making sure the center line of the jig aligns with the center line we just put on the riser. Once the jig is centered it's time to drill the holes. Take the jig off and using a 1/2 tap tap the larger of the 2 holes this will be where the locking hardware will be epoxied in. Thats all I can do to the riser for now untill the locking hardware gets here. So I will make a start on tapering the limb lams. I hope I get them right otherwise there is a lot of work gone to waste not to mention great looking lams
Here is a glimse of what will be the limbs. I have 2 tapered to .140 and the other 2 reverse tapered to .130 I still have to take more off but can't do that till I get the fiber glass and action bamboo because from here on in it is precise measurements. Of course I am not going to show the whole limb lams just yet
Dave. What I have done so far is the easy part With the lams after every pass of the drum sander from here, I have to get the micrometer out and measure them as I need a total of .293 butt thickness on the limbs that of course is without the wedges. The glass, boo and locking hardware will be here sometime next week so by next week end all going well I should have the bow all but finished and ready to test shoot
I forgot to mention the taper rate on the lams is .002" per running inch.:d When I do the glue up of the limbs it will be in this order from belly to back. Clear glass, Taper, Action Boo, Wedge, Reverse taper and clear glass.
Just one more thing I can do till the rest of the gear gets here. I went ahead and cut out the shelf and sight window. Oh and I wet the riser block down to get an idea of what it's gonna look like with the finish on. There is still a lot of wood to come off the riser in the final shaping but I can't do that till the limbs are made and tillered.
Holy smokes them colours look brill , i'm gonna wet my pants .... not really , but hey that is nice Russ . Could you explain tillered ? , heard of it but not sure what the process is mate .
