So I went out back for my daily regiment of 1/2 to a dozen shots to prep for the upcoming season. I drew back and settled my pin and suddenly felt like I was struck by a steel pipe. I looked at my bow, now on the ground, my bloody and suddenly swollen wrist and my shredded string. My hand held release, which I found about a 1/2 hr later was about 30 yds further into the woods. Broken string. Bow doesn't appear to be damaged but the local pro shop will have to check it out. I'm one of those really attentive people who checks things, then checks them again to prevent things like this from happening. Never noticed any fraying or cuts or anything that would indicate this could happen. Anyone with similar experiences? Time is running out with the season quickly approaching.

That's terrible. Hope you and the bow are okay. Never had anything like that happen before.

Im confused, it seems like you didn't let go of your release? If it was in your hands and found elsewhere, it seems like you released it. If it's a shredded string and not cut, the string didn't break...which again leads me to believe that you let go of your release?

What kind of bow? This isn't asked to bash, I have heard of this happening on some of the new Hoyts with the stock strings on them. I shoot a 2013 Hoyt Spyder, so definitely not bashing Hoyt here.

I shoot a 2006 Bowtech Constitution. It still had the original string and it was taken care of. The reason my release was so far away is because I shoot a four finger thumb trigger release and when this happened my draw arm went back and I released the release. I know the string was old and was subject to wear and tear. I'm fine (thanks), my bow will be checked out hopefully later today. I can't find anything wrong, I'm not an expert though, if I was this post wouldn't exist.

so what happened? Im still confused on whether you released the release and it went flying with the string or not. I think you tried to say that you dropped it? But being found 30 yards away kind of rules that out. Not trying to be insensitive.

Didn't mean to be confusing, I basically threw the release backwards when this happened. It took me about a half hour to find the release, it wasn't really 30 yds away, maybe 30 ft. I never triggered the release or simply let it come out of my hand, holding pressure resulted in it ending up behind me.

There was an episode of the crush where Tiffany lakosky was drawing back and the string got out of the cam tracks and her handheld release flew way back. So I think it may be something that happens in situations like this

Man that really sucks. Sounds like you are alright which is the most important thing. Bow will be fixed. Things like this happen just have to be very aware of what's going on with your bow. I have heard stories where arrows with broadheads are bouncing around in a bow case not secured and strings get cut. Good luck getting it fixed and hope you have it back for the season!

Not trying to bash you but I would never wait 7 years to replace a string. String is like fishing line on a rod/reel. It may look ok but the integrity of it is not.

Glad your ok and hope your bow is also!!

I used to go years without replacing strings also but that was years ago . With todays bow and what they cost , I replace the string and cables every 2-3 years .

Thanks for all the well wishes, I'm fine. A doctors appointment for my bow is scheduled for later today, hopefully it's ok too. Been bowhunting for almost 30 yrs and never had anything like this happen. I've always up-graded, traded in or whatever you want to call getting a new bow every three years or so but have kept this one for so long because it's been perfect for me. Heckler, don't worry I should be bashed, I know strings wear out in places we cant see and I've often thought about bringing it in for a replacement. Shame on me for procrastinating.

I have heard from a local shop when asked about starting out with a back tension release what would be a good one to start with. The owners response was that he has seen too many near injury / accidents with them. I asked what the hell does he mean, he explained they are tricky to learn and some people have actually somehow launched / released the release and either stayed on the string and beat hell outta riser and archer or launched it forward or backward damn near killing others. IDK, good luck and hope you have a great season now moving forward.
